Let's say you only have $800, and you have no choice but to go live in the woods in the middle of January until the next year and it gets quite cold.. lots of snow... and there is a town near by for your necessities.

What would you do?
What would you buy?
& what shelter would you make?

Would it be impossible would you die?

I want to test the wilderness/survival/intelligence of these board members.

Well, for me i would find a place in the middle of a shrub that has a opening. I would make a shelter with the things i bought. the thing i would have bought would have been flint stone, hunting knife, cheep tarp x2, and some reasuable jar to fill with water. i would also buy some snare wire and 3 cans of pop, and some mythly hydrate. I would make a alcahol stove made from pop cans and also some cheep meat. to store away incase i dont catch and rabbits or squirrls ( this all totallying around 3-400 bucks). I would also have brought my very heavy parka, boots, ski-pants, spare clothes. i would try to sell animal skins for sum quick cash. and yeah that about it.

Really? First thing I would do is head over to the intro section and tell everybody a little bit about myself before trying to quiz them.

Of course, that's only if I didn't want everyone to think I was a toll.

Hey Artofwoc - follow the advice from AKS. It's interesting that you want to "test" the knowledge of others here. Why is that?

I watched snowshoes and solitude and they built a place out of the material they found around the woods.

So you need an axe and a bow saw with some spare blades. Spend the other $750 on food

800 bucks, hmmmmmmmm.........think I'd buy a nice present for WE and his wife. Give him the rest and work off my room and board.

I would use the money to offset the cost of my funeral............after the spring thaw and assuming they even found me..............

I'd use the money to buy me an air ticket home.

I would answer one of these but they seem to pop up at least once a week and get old after awhile. Just use the search button and I am sure you can find all of the information you need to find out how to survive there.

I want to test the wilderness/survival/intelligence of these board members.

I'd pick up an old canvas 2-3 person tent ($100 or so), wood stove w/ chimney pipe ($50), doublebit axe ($40) and sharpening file ($5), a sled to put this all on ($30), a good length of rope to pull the sled and use afterward ($25), a pair of 30" snowshoes ($150), 50+lb flour ($20), 50lb salt pork ($150), 50lb sack of potatoes ($10), couple tubs of butter ($15), some lean beef ($130), bunch of dried fruit ($45), and 25lb of rolled oats ($20). Then I'd make a dozen bricks of pemmican and a couple pounds of hardtack before I set off, grab some pots and pans from the kitchen, my pack (which is always ready and contains sleeping bag, clothes, gear, knives, navigation, firesteel, etc), and various spices like sugar, salt, mustard, red pepper, and black pepper. Load everything on the sled and hoof it near a stream out of sight from other people (if this is a shtf hypothetical). Set up the tent, equip the stove, lay down a good layer of boughs, and make myself comfortable. Use the axe (or maul if I decide to bring something more) to break up the stream for water, collect dead firewood, etc. If you watch Alone in the Wilderness, it's pretty standard day-to-day living after the initial setup.

edit: oh, of course my rifle and ammunition. Once spring rolls around there will be plenty of protein running around :)
