Yesterday went on a boat rip on lake called Bung Boraphet. There are large water plants which they call here sai bua and my girlfriend snatched a bunch of them out of the water and cooked themup. The plants are about 5 feet tall or so with red flowers, and you strip the insides of the stems and chop them into sections and boil or fry them in oil. They are delicious and I don't know if this plant exists in US but will try to find out.

I asked my wife of 33 years (she is Thai/ Laotian). She remembers that plant and thinks it is some sort of Water Lilly, and recalls a few years ago one of her girlfriends here found some in a lake in upstate NY that were smaller, but cooked up as you mentioned very well. I do remember seeing them when I was there (near Rayong province) for two years in the early 70's. Not sure if they are in anyother area of the States. Hope it helps a little

Would be interested to see what these are. I really doubt there are any in the states from what you said.

Yes thank you, I believe it is a water lily. I took photos but I am an idiot and am not sure how to send photos to forum. I will ask my more knowledgable computer friends to help me after I get home to Chiang Mai. That is if I get my laptop fixed which crapped out on this trip.

Thanks for photo milfoil. sai bua doesn't look anything like this. It has a much larger flower which is pink and the stem is thick and 4 to 5 feet long.

Thanks for help crashdive but now my computer is shot. It is a laptop, about 10 years old and given to me by organization I used to work for. It will not turn on, only buzzes like it wants to but then dies out. I am writing this email from internet at carrefours supermarket but cannot send photos. I will if I ever get my laptop fixed.
