Will deer fat be greasy or to put it simply, be ready to apply to a bow to oil when the fat is stripped right off the raw carcass? I know it could be liquified, and I have done that with small game, but is raw deer fat already oily or greasy when it comes straight from the carcass? Thanks.

My experience with deer fat is that it is rather solid. I have rendered it down and used it when making buckskin.

you want to render it, as it's the oils from the body fat you need, and not the fats.

i don't know what rotting animal fat will do to wood in the long term, but i can't imagine bacteria is good for a bow.
