just came in from feeding the horses dark and quiet and mostly full moon out mild temps put out a bale by the horse trough and sat there a minute smelling the smoke from my fire in the house hearing the horses in the barn munching on oats and apples, this is why i drive so far every day into town, i figured the other night coming home that i spend almost 350 hours driving to and from work a year thats two months mor ework than the guys who live in town thats allot and gets to me some days, but nights like this is why i love being out of town not as rustic as i would like but as close as i can get for now 5 more years and no more electricity then i will be 100 percwent off the grid. ah these are great times we live in

Just looking at the moon and seeing it's perfection, then being overwhelmed with the perfection of everything. People don't appreciate how awesome it is to go out in the moon light, even at -30 below. And the northerlights............

Well, it wasn't -30 here tonight, but at 7:55 watched the space shuttle streak across the sky above a rising full moon. Truely a magnificent sight.

i have not yet experienced the northern lights, but probably my favorite full moons are in the winter, we have a radio statio up here called 100.7 the island and on tuesday nights at 7 pm they do a native hour and play all native country but also include several pow wow songs which during the winter i crank up the outside stereo and have a fire going i wunder what all the critters must think as the cold air carries the chanting thru the forest?

I get what you're saying, Hopeak. Man has done some pretty remarkable things. Computers are capable of nearly limitless calculations. We touch the farthest corners of our solar system and the deepest trenches in our oceans. And still, I look at a simple blade of grass and think, I can snatch part of the blade off and it grows right back. Nothing man has ever done can do that. A simple blade of grass. Pretty amazing if you think about it.

same tonight i finished in the barn but it is a moonless night so i go to the wood pile turn on my halogen light the only light on as far as the eyes can see, a cold wind biting but only my ears are cold beneath my resistal hat i load up some more wood that i had split earlier today, i watch as the small snow flakes blow lazily around, and i think to my self what a wonderful world.... not really but i do think to myself man i was born for this..

Made me recall a couple years ago I was in a campground with my grandson and this little kid about the same age from the next camp site over stopped us when we were on our way to get some more firewood. He says "excuse me mister..."

I stopped and waited. He pointed up at the sky and said "Is that the northern Lights?"

I looked up and answered "Sure is."

The kid goes "Wow"

Me and the boy just kind of looked at each other like "yeah, maybe we get to take too much for granted."

I always liked the line in that movie The Last Samurai, when the samurai (whose name I won't even try to get right) says to Tom Cruise..."to feel the life in every breath"

WE's post (as usual) and the responses give me pause for thought, I really do have so much to be grateful for in nature---and in life.

WE/ how far of a drive is it for you? when we moved the family to the country last year I started the 1.5 hour/89 mile one way commute to the city for work every day. many days I have thought its not worth it...not the country living, thats more than worth it, but the job. this question rolls around in my head at least once a week, especially now since its daylight savings time here so I leave before light and get home after dark!:(
