Do people carry the parts to make a fire drill (bow):
Base board, spindle, bow, thong. socket with them?
Or only a few parts?
Or do you just use what is imediately available?

I would think that if you would go through all the trouble to carry the parts for a fire drill that you would just carry a lighter, flint, or matches. The fire drill is an emergency fire making tool that should only be made in the field if you can't light a fire any other way. You can make one of available materials and a shoe lace if you don't have any string or rope handy. The fire drill will take more energy out of you than using a flint, and in a survival situation having energy is crutial. The only reason to make a fire drill in my opinion other than being up the creek, is to practice the technique while camping or hiking.
