New to the forum, just thought I would drop by for an introduction. I live in Atlanta now, after being all over the world with the Marines. I have spent extensive time in woods, mountains, cold weather, deserts etc. However, keeping the survival skillset up to date is difficult. Last weekend I went on a rather light camping trip in N. Georgia, and I was shocked at how rusty I was. Basic fire starting, fishing, cooking etc. seemed like a real task. It was wet, but still, I was displeased.

So I've been looking into ways to retrain myself.

What do you guys that live in the city do to maintain the skills? The only thing I can think of is to do hard core camping trips frequently, and if possible longer trips annually. I would like to build a little hut in the woods to get away and focus on living a weekend with very basic equipment.

Welcome and thanks for your service. Why hard core training? You don't have to remove a lot of metal every time you want to sharpen a knife. You just clean up the edge a bit. Same with good skills IMO. You don't need to go through basic again just pick a subject and work on it when you are out to keep those skills sharp. If a particular subject seems extra difficult then work on it the next few times you are out to bring those skills back up to par.

Semper Fi!
you can easily practice some of you skills individually in your backyard. (fire starting) or at a local park. (if the police ask, you are trying to perfect your skills before you give a presentation to a boyscout troop) if you have a backyard to play in, it doesn't take a lot of room to build a lean to or put up a delta dome using poncho. pick a skill that needs perfecting and use your imagination.
