SYNOPSIS: F3DM plug-in hybrid will sell for equivalent of $22,000 and has a 110 km electric-mode driving range. It will be the first mass-produced PHEV in the world, beating GM and Toyota to market by at least a year.

SHENZHEN, China -- A Chinese company best-known for making cellphone batteries says it is on the verge of launching the country's first mass-produced electric car and may also have lined up its first large purchase order.

In an interview, BYD Co. Chairman Wang Chuanfu said the car, known as the F3DM, will be on sale in China by the end of November, pending government approval. Mr. Wang declined to provide a sales target or price range for the new electric car but said in Beijing earlier this year that the vehicle could carry a price tag of about 150,000 yuan ($22,000) and is capable of going as far as 110 kilometers on electricity when fully charged. When the battery is discharged, the 1 liter gasoline engine can carry the car for another 300 miles.

We decided to first offer the F3DM hatchback rather than the larger F6DM sedan because we know that the European consumers prefer small cars, on the other hand we plan to offer dual mode version for each car model in the future," a BYD official said at the motor show. Prior to the F3DM model, BYD has showcased a similar model -the F6DM in the Detroit Auto Show early this year

The F3DM uses BYD's self-developed iron batteries, which the company said could be recharged for more than 2,000 times and can power the car to run over 600,000 miles. The car equipped with BYD's batteries can travel as long as 100 miles after one charge, much longer than the 25-mile duel model vehicles offered by other automakers.

BYD Co., the automaker's parent company, is the world’s second largest rechargeable battery producer. BYD entered the automotive industry in 2003. The automaker announced earlier that it will sell rechargeable hybrid vehicles in China this year.

Seriously, you do NOT want to be in a crash in a Chinese-made car.
