I just finished w/ my zebu style knife. It used to be a machete that I had from the PI. It's made from an auto spring. I put a big chip in the blade that made it hard to sharpen. So, off with the chip. It feels good. I think it's a keeper.

I started with a plasma cutter. Then a belt sander. Followed up with a file.

I've got a couple of used brush mower blades I'm thinking about using. They're about 3/4" thick. Any ideas?

With something that thick, just about anything you want. Leave it thick - make a hawk. Forge and hammer - sword.

They are just real great people, if you read all the areas of their site and read their diary (blog) Fireweed, you will get to know them. How they subsist out there, will help explain what it takes.

Scott the blade creator, Aki the sheath maker and artist, Kai just supervises and helps out where he can. They live really off the grid, and have started a great blog about their lifestyle called Fireweed (it's a diary with pic's), a great read for all.

They recover sawmill blades that are used in the Cariboo/Chilcotin, British Columbian mills, that's what their tools and blades are made from. The handles are made from British Columbia moose, elk, and deer antler, or selected local hardwoods.

They've been living now in the Boreal Forest on the edge of the Chilcotin plateau in the central British Columbia bush since 1997. Just good honest people.

Their types of Steel page is (like the other pages, and the Fireweed Diary) really worth the time to read so you know the great quality steel that will, and is guaranteed to last a lifetime, and the sharpening of any of their tools is on them.

GW thanks for the info. Those folks make some GREAT knives from what I see. I think I found my next knife.
