I'm still reading this journal, it is like spending each day with Dick. Each day starts out with his weather report, which I enjoy. The man was amazing. Remember this is a journal in his own words, not a book written about him, this is 500 pages, with some pictures in the intro section. Folks it's worth the read.

No, this was all that was released separately, that he wanted in his own words, the way he wrote it.

Gray Wolf, thank you very much for this link :):):) I have been having a bear of a time finding any of Richards work in the bookstores in my area. Had to special order One Man's Wilderness. The beatle wasn't laughing for a bit...LOL!

I have a copy of my great aunt's journal. The journel goes from the late 1920s to 1960. She was a fire watcher in the Superior Nat'l Forest for about 30 of those years, and was very witty. Every spring she would paddle in - every autumn she would paddle out - to her log cabin on Wilson Lake - also in the Superior Nat'l Forest. Very interesting life.

Used to visit her when she was older. I could always tell how many bear she'd shot lately - by how many unmended bullet holes there were in the screen door. The woman loved bear.

Holy smokes that's a lot of reading!! It's very sobering though that what he sought for so badly (peace and solitude) was sold out because of the book/film deal. Later on in his journals it seems that every day there is another plane coming in, bringing tourists, hunters, or whatever, all wanting a little piece of what once was his little piece of heaven. I'm sure he didn't make a lot of money off the book/film deal, not that he needed it anyway, living life as he had set up to live. It's sad in a way to see how things turned out for him, just proving that most of the time idealism is just a pipe dream.

Remember the "IDEALISM" is yours not his. If you want to burn someone at the stake it should be Jimmy Carter.

I only WISH I could burn Jimmy Carter at the stake; I would in a heartbeat - along with Ted Stephens. It certainly meant no disrespect for the man; I absolutely idolize Mr. Proenneke! My point was that most of the time our idealism doesn't pan out or somehow it gets snatched away (robbed) from us. It is sad to think how much he loved his little cabin and the peacefulness there at Twin Lakes only to find it overwhelmed in his later years with tourists and NPS people running around.


A member: Alaska native and I discussed that on a old thread, we both knew Dick, and what mattered to him.

It goes on today, I live in the National Forest, and there is a bill in the U.S. Senate, to turn everything around Turnagain Arm into some Historical Heritage Thingie, administered by the National Parks Service.
