I thought this would have already been covered, but I did a serch and nothing came up.
Whenever I go into the woods I take a bag of corn chips with me, they come in a small waterproof bag and (Due to the oil content) will burn hotter and longer than any tinder I know of. Another one that burns hotter but not as long, is puff-corn. I first saw this somewhere to use with potato chips, after some experimenting I found the fritos to work much better. There might be a way to extract the oil onto some tinder or char-cloth for you traditionalists, but my butane has not yet needed much help.

There are a lot of commercial tinders that burn long and hot. Homemade tinders like cotton balls with petrolium jelly or parafin added will also burn a long time........and you don't have to worry about eating all of your tinder before you need it.;)

Ive tried a cottonball, vaseline, and kerosine mix and it burned longer (I dont think it was as hot), but it has alwasy struck me as a pretty easy precautionary measure to tke the fritos along.
Mainly, because its easy to do, just grab the bag and go.
Also, the bag can be used to carry water in if needed.
The frito bag is large enough that the fire will burn with no fuel other than fritos for a good half hour.
And lastly, If everything does go OK the fritos make a pretty good snack.

I'm with you on the snack thing. Hey, if it works for you, then it works for me.

Corn chips are good to take they make good hunting bait, fire starters, and they taste good.multiple use products make sence in survival.

Although I enjoy corn chips, in "survival" IMO 1. they take up too much room 2. the nutritional value is far below other options 3. there are better fire starters to carry.

There are other fire starters but none of them tast as good as a corn chip, I was considering how nmultiple uses are convenient.

No arguing with the better tasting statement. What do you think is more convenient to carry in or on your pack though......a big ole bag of fritos, or a fire kit that fits into a 3" X 5" pouch that straps to your knife sheath? In this pic each foil piece contains 2 vaseline soaked cotton balls - use em as tinder (about 8 minute burn time) or gradually feed out "wick" for about 17 minutes of candle. The fire sticks below the lint and cotton burn for more than 10 minutes. Add a couple of esbit or triox tabs......may not taste as good, but.....
