Capoeira is incredibly demanding as a physical fitness discipline and it did originate in African fighting styles. The Brazilian slaves were forbidden to practice their martial arts so they incorporated the moves into dance steps and set it all to music. On the outside it looked like they were just dancing, which was OK.

(As an aside they were also forbidden to practice their religion so they adopted all the Catholic Saints and renamed them with the names of their former dieties and carried on as usual. 85% of Brazilians will say they are Catholic and 65% will admit they practice Spiritism. Slavery had a HUGE impact on the general Brazilian culture)

The whole point of Capoeira is for a pair to do all those fancy moves that guy was doing and NOT connect with your "dance" partner. Of course training to connect with those sweeping kicks and how to recover from them is a whole different matter in an actual fight.

As a test of balance, strength, flexibility, etc, Capoeira is hard to beat. On its own it isn't really a fighting style as this guy showed by getting his clock cleaned. Mac
