OK - just to make sure that we're on the same page:

The bottom piece of wood is your fire board. The vertical piece that spins to create friction (with the fire board) that I called spindle is more correctly called your drill. The bow needs little expination. The top piece that you are using to hold your drill in place and apply downward pressure is your socket. You should be able to carve an indentation in your socket so that the drill will fit in it. If you can't carve it because the wood is too hard for the tools you have, use a softer piece of wood - even green if that's all you have. (remember, the coal is created with the friction between your drill and fireboard)

Good deal. Now you know how Tom Hanks felt.

Had it not been about 1 in the morning when I first made fire with a hand drill, I could have easily acted out his "I made fire" celebration dance! Somehow I think the neighbors may have been a little concerned with a crazy man dancing around a bonfire in the middle of the night... I've only made friction fires a handful of times and each time it seems like a miracle.

My neighbors have gotten used to it.
