Oh I just have to jump on this one. EWWWW I lived with Red Tide for 13 years in FL. Usually would strike a couple times a year. If a person had not experienced it, it's hard to believe. What that article did not say is that when the algae blooms it sucks the oxygen from the sea water & GUESS WHAT???? All the fish die. Then they all wash up on the shore or into the bay waters and it is kinda on the warm side and they rot. Now you have the toxins that the algae is throwing into the air & the water & the stench of rotting fish. Oh tis just paradise...NOT. Can't turn the car AC on because the intake of outside air will choke you. Many a time, I have walked out the backdoor & heaved. In Sarastoa County, they (THEY) would haul the prisoners out to all the beaches to clean up the mess. It took weeks sometimes and even then the aroma remained. If you look closely at the newspaper picture, you will see the boy in the front has a respirator hanging around his neck. From what I saw in FL, no way can they build a sea fence and have it work. The algae bloom removes oxygen from the water, so while they might be able to corral the actual bloom, there's still going to be dead/dying fish. What a lovely sight...a fence out in the water, piled high with dead rotting fish & algae. Oh I am sooooo happy to NOT be in FL - or China for that matter. Oh, that stench can be smelled inland 15-20 miles. Not as strong but you can smell it. PEEEWWWW

They can be. One of the largest sources of phosphates in Florida (which cause the algae blooms to thrive) is the cattle industry. In China I imagine that untreated sewage could be a contributer (at least if they fertilize the fields as they do Korea). Depending on the soil and lawn types fertilizers won't contribute (if used properly) The grasses and plants absorb the fertilizer and use it - natures filter to the waterways. Over use will cause a problem.
