I have these weird onions that produce bulbs on TOP of the stalk. That's right, they don't flower, they just produce bulbs on top as well as a single bulb underground. I just found out what they are: "top onions", "walking onions" or "egyptian walking onions", all the names for the same thing. I ate some slightly cooked the other day and they were medium heat and quite good.

Did you eat the tops or the bottoms?

There are some flowers that have what are called proliferations, which are mini plants that grow on the tip of the stem of the other plant. Daylilies come to mind.

I wonder if this is the same phenomenon only the onions have been bread to encourage it.

Plant the ones on tops and you will get more onions. There are alot of "top' onion onions.

I ate the onions on top. They were bite-sized, about the size of marbles.
