Any reason you want a basha? A poncho will do the same thing and is a multi-use item.

You can find a lot of them in the UK.

I just took some gortex and sewed a 9X 14 tarp. I have used a wool blanket and poncho many times.

Get a gortex Bivi off of E bay if you want light and all weather. TDW has one and loves it.

I am a regular Wally customer for those tarps. I buy several a year, mainly because I use them for everything. For the cost they do what they should and when late fall rolls around I use them to cover overflow from the woodpile.:)

I got mine at Brigade Quartermasters. Kind of pricey, but I had mine pitched in a 80MPH wind and it never ripped or looked like it was going to.

The Bashas sold at brigade are NOTHING compared to an original. Brigades weighs in at about 5x the weight w/o half the durability..A Basha can be used for a number of tasks, not just a weather shield. At 8x11 feet they come in quite handy..I have 2. Both made in the UK...

They can also be used as a hammock, litter, sleeping/bivvy bag. I prefer it to a poncho...Here I used one to make a ruck raft to float myself down river..

Are you kidding me? I can see the preserver under your BDU! Hey, come here. Does this look like Bear Gryllis to you? See right there. Isn't that the outline of a life preserver.

Sure looks like it.

I knew it!

Has anyone tried the Hennessy Hammock? I saw one on the weekend briefly and it looks like a very solid piece of kit.

Let's see......floatation device ----- drown ----- floatation device ----- drown.... Seems like a pretty easy decision to me.;)

I was joken..there was no flotation device other then the ruck..LOL:D

I live in mostly swamp and marsh lands so I do lots of waterborne training..

Like so..a BHI SOF Ruck..Wieght, about 30-35lbs...

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m210/eastscout/p1013239.jpg

Pulled the Ruck rain cover over it and sinched it all the way..

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m210/eastscout/p1013240.jpg

Sat that inside the Basha and tied up the sides, twisted it, bent it over and finished it off with a strip of 550 and a bungee cord..Wrapped the rest of it with the other bungess to use as handles and to stow the extra materials hanging off..

Test float for about 10-15 minutes with the LBE tossed on the top...BHI SAW Gunner Rig (makes a great Survival Rig..BIG pouches..)

Yes i was alone..There arnt too many people that share my passion and interest in knowing how to do odd tasks that could save your life..I used the Cams timer for the pics and dared to take it out in the water w/ me a few times..

Here is my get outta town with out being robber killed or raped when the roads are parking lots, kayak..

That is a nice set up. What brand is the kayak and what kind of rails did you install?

Rucksack
08-12-2008, 07:09 PM
The rail is actually an ALICE pack frame turned upside down and screwed to the deck and a Nav light added for channel crossing at night, plus a small angel head I use back in the marshes to gage depth ahead of me..The back rail is used to hold my Ruck and is a fold out leg from an old army hospital cot.... Then I added the cargo pouches, canteens etc etc...

Its a Mainstream Patriot kayak..designed for swamp and open water use. Flat bottom so its super stable. I can stand up in it...Hold up to 475lbs of wieght..

Thanks guys..glad you liked the post!

Why? Is this a GQ or an outdoor forum?

I have one that came from Brigade, and it is way to heavy to carry. Have had it for years and have only used it once.

That's what I like about these boards - you run into people who actually practice what they preach.
They think things through and don't procrastinate.
Nicely done Mr Ruck.
