View Full Version : Question about metal cans for storage

I know there are lots of different types of food storage containers out there but has anybody ever used the gallon metal paint cans you can get at home stores? (Obviously not the ones with paint already in them but the empty ones for extra paint.)

A lady I work with said this is what her ward told her to use because of the nice seal. She said to freeze for a while and put a dry bay leaf in there to help keep bugs away.
I am thinking of storing things like Mac-n-cheese, pasta, and rice in there.

What are your thoughts, experiences with this?

I searched and read most of you use plastic 5 gallon buckets.
What else do you use?

Thanks

Regardless of the container you use, I suggest you first package up everything in smaller batches using a vacuum sealer like a Seal-A-Meal.

RCKCRWLER - I'm frugal (read cheap) - some of the stroage containers that I use/reuse are two liter soda bottles and my 5lb protien powder containers. Clean them out real good - dry them - you're good to go. Best of all, they're free (sort of).

I've purchased the quart sized containers from Home Depot to make stoves out of. They have a coating on the inside. I assume it's to prevent paint or other chemicals from reacting to the metal. The down side for storage would be rust. I would think they would rust over time just from the moisture in the air. There is also the concern if they get wet. I think I'd rather go with plastic containers.

One thing that you can get are some really good carabiners from Lowes and Home Depot. You can find them in the hardware section for only a few dollars and they are rated for 2000 lbs. or more. Something that hefty from Petzl would run you $25.00 or so.

Uh, Probably.

Mea maxima culpa. So, please explain to the uninformed just what carabiners have to do with food storage containers.

He referenced getting the paint can at homes stores. I was just telling him something else he could get there. Rocket science....carabiners.....rocket science....

So, if you asked about, say, cheap compasses, and I told you that you could buy them at WalMart, should I also tell you about, say, the cheap bras you could buy there, too? And NO, "BIG brother", I don't wear bras myself. :D

I use the Ward (LDS) cannery here. If you do not try to see if there is one in your area or don't use it (I'll say ot) You my friend are a fool.

I have the LDS Preparedness manual printed out. It answers most of your questions on what to store and where to store it. Also gives ideas on where to store it in your home.

I have several tin cans from the 60's and early 70's. These cans have a tin coating on the inside that prevents any external rust from getting to the goods stored on the inside. Although acidic foods, i.e; tomatoes, citrus fruits, etc. will react with the metal cans and must be stored in glass jars. New "modern" cans have a teflon coating on the inside and I would not recommend using them for storing anything that will be ingested. I use "NO PLASTIC" containers. . .don't like them!

If you ask at your local grocery, in the deli dept., they will sell you or sometimes give you their used food containers. Large size will hold 25 pounds of flour, cornmeal, etc and the small probaly 10-12 pounds of food. You can order oxygen absorbers on line at $8.95 for 100 to pop into the container before sealing and "THEY SAY", shelf life is very very long. I also pop in a few bay leaves...can't hurt. You will probably have to go back several times to get enough as lots of folks are now on to this. I also need to check with Subway & places like that. You can also order a THINGIE that easily unseals and pops open the sealed buckets. Hope this helps.

Are you kidding? Are "Bro's" real products for man boobies?

Also, the water bottles with BPA (bisphenol-A) don't leach estrogen, they leach a compound that acts EXACTLY LIKE estrogen by binding to estrogen receptors on cells. Minor semantics there...but anyway...
