Any tractor owners here?

On my long list of things to get is a log splitter for the tractor. Any recommendations on one driven off the PTO vs. the hydraulics? (John Deere 790 if that makes any difference).

I love splitting the old-fashion way with an ax but I always throw my back out doing it.

Braggsurvivor probably has first hand knowledge about your question. He's been busy and not on the forum too much lately, you may want to send him a pm - he'll probably have some ideas for you when he returns.

I take it you are talking about running an auxillary hydraulic pump off the PTO vs. using your 790's remotes to run the splitter. We have always run our's off a PTO pump. Most around this area do the same. However, it is really a personal decision. Do you have any specs on the GPM of the 790's pump. I know our PTO driven pump for our log splitter runs around 8.....and it is still a little slow.

From John Deere specs site (http://www.deere.com/specsapp/CustomerSpecificationServlet?sbu=CCE&pciModel=0790%20LV&displayModelName=790%20Compact%20Tractor%20(27%20h p)&tM=GC&pNbr=1201LV)

PTO HP (kW) - Gear transmission 24 (17.6)

I'm reading that as 24 horsepower on the PTO

I think that makes more sense for us rather than the hydraulics

I would say go with the PTO powered, too, after looking at those specs.
