That is pretty cool. One word of caution. Some of the cans will have a liner that needs to be burned out before cooking starts or find a can that isn't lined.

That is quite simply... awesome.

Easy to build and easy to modify for other uses, nice little stove that anyone could make, and with easily available materials too :).

Cheers for that!

Or, if you have some more time, alcohol and soda cans you can try making one of these guys... not as simple but not bad.

Umm, I guess you could use some of that wild turkey for fuel but I wouldn't. Probably try to use isopropyl alcohol, it burns great.

Alcohol is okay. Like everything else, it has its drawbacks. They can be the pits when its cold.

Yep, you can have some problems if it is cold enough. The first link I have there talks about "priming" the stove, which is something you would have to do in cold weather. I don't know how cold is to cold to use one of these but I will do some experimenting to find out when I move back to Alaska. I would try to find out while I am here but it doesn't ever get cold enough in Okinawa.

That site (instructables.com) is really cool and I’ve been there many a time.
I would note a word of caution on what you find there though. Like anything else on the net you need to do a little research on the side. The people posting there are well, who knows who, and there have been quite a few items that (especially electronics section) that can be dangerous or just will not work. I have looked at several solar ovens, hobo stoves, pots etc. on that site and very little to nothing is mentioned about things like toxic fumes, leaching chemicals etc. etc. Again just a word of caution to make sure your can is not coated with something(or made with for that matter) especially with something that is in direct contact with food.

You're right, Dan. There are some on there that show you how to get AA batteries out of a 12V battery. Pure garbage.

I saw the "Cancake" cooker for making pancakes. With a can wall that thin, I would expect the pancakes to burn every time. Anyone tried this?

I have made the iso stoves out of adult beverage bottles. I have a Turbo 1 stove and a trangia alco stoves.

Everclear works great. Iso in 90% works well.

www.minibulldesign.com/mbdstore/ gives you ideas and he has vids of him baking bread on one of the stoves he sells. Tiny is a great guy and stands by his work.

http://zenstoves.net/ is another place to start. All kinds of stoves and instructions on how to make them.

Check that first link, Don. It goes to minibull but there aren't any videos or stoves on it.

He changed his home page. Looks like I need to update my Favorites list.

I went in and checked the links and the Zen one works well.

Uh, first post on this thread.

Crashdive posted that he thought the stove was neat. He did not say if he had made it or tested it by making pancakes. My thought was powering this by burning wood would probably make the top too hot, and would burn the pancakes. An esbit tab would lower the flame, and might make it work without burning the pancakes.

My idea is someone should probably add to the inside of the can, several layers of metal to spread the heat a little to prevent burning the pancakes.

EDIT:

Doh! I went to the link. It's a different stove than what I saw. There is another link (on Instructables?) that uses an upside-down pop can for the exact same thing, cooking pancakes in the bottom (which is now top). So that's why I was confused.

Sorry. My mom drank when she was pregnant. :)
