View Full Version : How many of you have college degrees?

My mom and dad are disappointed that I never finished college. They often refer to my education level as a reason for me for not having a great paying job. I always tell them I'm not the only person without a degree. So I'm asking how many of you have degrees and what type of degree do you have.

I have a BS in Anthropolgy. Although, I did not choose a career path that requires a degree- none the less I am glad I went to college. I feel my education enriches my life and it helped me to further develop critical thinking skills that benefit me in all aspects of life.
I had a pretty sheltered childhood, and parents that were close-minded, so college opened my eyes to other possibilities, and helped me see that beliefs, culture, etc...are relative and unique to the individual- not carved in stone as some people would like us to believe.

I get my high school diploma in 12 days.
"The average income of a high school graduate is $28,700 versus $53,800 for individuals with a bachelor's degree. In terms of lifetime income, a typical high school graduate would expect, in present value terms, an income of $940,000. By comparison, a typical college graduate would expect to earn, in present value terms, $1.8 million or almost twice as much as an individual with only a high school education."

That said, it's also important to note that not everyone wants to earn $54K a year. Some value the view out their back door far more or enjoy a lower paying job because it's what they are inspired to do. Everyone is different and you have to find your place, where ever that is, that makes you content.
We need engineers and computer scientists but we also need laborers and police and small business people and.....
Someone once commented to Dave Thomas that eduction wasn't all that important. He'd done very well and he didn't complete his eduction. "Imagine what I could have done if I had completed it." We all second guess ourselves no matter what direction we take in life.
Tunick, you're 31. The most important thing is to be happy with what you do for a living. But, that includes earning sufficient income to comfortably provide for yourself, your family and your future. Only you and your family know what you need (not want) to be comfortable and content as the years go by.
In any event, going back to school can open up new opportunities you may have never considered. Think about that. If there's a field you're interested in, enroll in an evening course and learn more about it. You never know. Education never hurt anyone.
In 1985, I was teaching at one of those internationally-known "Bawston" (as Sam says) colleges, and a dean offered me the opportunity to obtain a second doctorate with about 18 months of intensive study. My then-wife told me that 9 years of college and grad school was enough, and that she'd divorce me if I went back to school. Now, I wish I'd have taken that dean up on his offer.
My degrees?
Bachelor of Arts/Political Science
Concentrations in Public Administration and Eastern Political Systems
Bachelor of Science/Business Administration
Concentration in Operations and Systems Management
Juris Doctor (Doctor of Laws)
My kids asked me about becoming lawyers and I gave them my advice. Result? My oldest son just became an environmental engineer. My daughter's working on her degree in accounting. My youngest guy still isn't sure.
But I sure wish I'd gotten that second doctorate!

Depending on what you're doing with your life, a degree may not be the way to go at all, especially what with all the student loans you'll have to pay off after. If your aim is to work and make money and buy things, a degree might come in handy. If you're more interested in actually living your life, learning all sorts of things that interest you, pursueing your passions...I don't know why you'd need to spend thousands of $$ at college for that?!
I have a BSW but am too much of a social misfit for a normal life, so instead of conforming to the grunt of the rat race, I now live very happily on less than social assistance money like a bum in the woods. In one way, I guess that makes me a total failure, but IMO I have learned 1,000 times more than I ever did in school by following my gut feeling and doing the things that make me happy. Most parents first and foremost want their kids to be happy, so hopefully yours get adjusted to your choices in time...
If you're happy, you haven't failed. You've won.:)
See, tunick? Everyone second guesses their decisions no matter what they are. If your mind is open you will receive an education. It can either be formal, informal or both. The two things no one can take away from you is your moral compass and your knowledge. Cherish both no matter what you decide to do.

I went to college knowing that I'd graduate, but while there I could never decide what I wanted to do. Despite the fact that I feel I wasted a lot of time I still managed to graduate a semester early. I have a Bachelor of Science with a primary concentration (not a major) in "social and behavioral sciences" and a secondary concentration (not a minor) in "natural science." I took a few random classes afterwards and began working on a master's in school administration. I was teaching at the time and thought being a principal would be cool. I got tired of teaching so I quit, did other things, went back for an accounting degree. I got 2/3 of that finished and was hired into a police job I wanted so I quit working on the accounting. In essence, I have one really "B.S." B.S. degree. ;) I'd like a master's in something. I've got my eye on a few.
I think I was like 43 when I completed my MBA. Something like that. We had a couple of folks in the class that were in their 50s and one that was in his 60s. It's not too late.
Tunick - What's your cut on this? After all, that's the most important opinion in this thread. It is about you.

I almost feel inadequate even posting in this thread. I'm 32 years and in about a year and nine months I'll graduate from local technical college. I'm studying Automotive Technology. Not a big degree that boast some acronym. I salute you folks that paid yer dues compared to all the hell raising I did during my teens and late twenties. I do have to wonder how many of y'all are weekend warriors vs. real cowboys. I want to be the guy that works on folks like Rick and Ken's car. I'm not much of a people person so I've always been the guy that builds or fixes things.
Anyway your education is definitely important. I wish I would have at least acquired an Associates Degree.

Man. Don't understand the inadequate remark. There's nothing wrong with being 32, graduating technical college or working on cars for a living. My mechanic and I are close personal friends. If the van or the truck isn't parked in front of his shop on Monday morning he's calling to see if I'm sick.....
My hats off to you, Sam. You set a goal and you are working toward it. That's good stuff all the way around.

Sam, nothing to feel inadequate about. Congratulations on your accomplishment! :)
Smartest guy I've ever known was my dad. He graduated from eighth grade. Had a great job, white-collar after all the promotions. Had dozens of people working under him.
I WISH I could find a good auto-tech. Idiot who's rebuilding my Cobra engine (spun a bearing) ordered dish-head pistons instead of flat head by mistake. Tries to tell me 8.5:1 compression would be the same as 10:1. He's supposed to be a Mustang Expert. I won't have the CONVERTABLE back for at least two more weeks. Tech charges me$7,500.00 for this job .

Shaved the heads. New everything. Pistons, Rods, bearings, crank, etc. Injectors and clutch, too. Labor was $3,000. I kept a close eye on the parts costs - not much mark-up. We'll see what the Dyno says when it's done.

No regrets here.
Tunick, learn the real secret of success...... the meaning of life for you.

I never had that problem. I always got stuff back together. It was the left over parts that I was never comfortable with. Somehow I always manage to make things work with less parts that the factory used.

That's why I asked for a second opinion.
My first question is, why the he ll do you worry about what your parents think at 31 or 32?
I am the first person in both my fathers and mothers family to go to college and get a degree.
8 years in the USMC, got out and went to work. 5 years later, I had a degree that I earned going to college Friday nights, Sat's, Sun's, and Monday nights. I ended up with a BS in Business. My wife and I then had our own company for years, spent a year as a hs acc. I & II teacher, then got into construction and worked my way from being an env. tech to project manager. Spent close to two years in an office and requested to be transferred to the tech. side again.
I am now a sr tech and I love my job. At 45, my job keeps me in shape, shape that others my age pay to go to a gym to get into.
Has the degree helped me? Oh yeh, of course, the year as a hs teacher would not have been done without it.
But, I did not need college to survive, my current job does not require it.
But then, if I ever want to go back into that dreaded 4 walled he ll, the degree will get me back in.

Diplomas R Us. Where else?
Makes me wonder why a grown man is worried about what his mommy and daddy think, rather than making decisions for himself.
But the US is failing the social experiment. The experiment where grown men live at home well into their late 20's, the experiment where a family without a father is promoted and hailed as successful when it is not, the experiment where we believe that the government is responsible for the success and failure of a man.
College today is just an extension of high school. The schools of today slam, slam, slam children from K to 6th grade, teaching to the next test. Yet, for some reason, we have an ever increasing decreasing grad. class and academic scores.
You don't need a college degree to be successful, you need heart.

Look at it this way...You can be 32 with a degree and a decent paying job, or you can be 32 without a degree flipping burgers. I once heard someone say they were too old to go back to school...
"I'm to old to go back to school! I'll be 45 when I graduate!"
"Well, you can be 45 without a degree doing what you're doing now and struggling to go paycheck to paycheck, or you can be 45 with a degree, working in a field you like, and not struggling so much anymore".
They decided to go get enrolled.

As far as having a degree to get a better job, I know of many collage grad,s who are flipping bugers, planting trees, and other manual labor. A degree does not make the person.

Below is an excerpt from my favorite Robert Frost poem. It's an interesting insight into human nature and how we all judge one another with our own individualized measuring sticks. I like the line towards the end about "My object in living is to unite My avocation and my vocation " to me that is the key to life- enjoy what you do!
TWO TRAMPS IN MUD TIME
Out of the mud two strangers came
And caught me splitting wood in the yard,
And one of them put me off my aim
By hailing cheerily "Hit them hard!"
I knew pretty well why he had dropped behind
And let the other go on a way.
I knew pretty well what he had in mind:
He wanted to take my job for pay...
...The time when most I loved my task
The two must make me love it more
By coming with what they came to ask.
You'd think I never had felt before
The weight of an ax-head poised aloft,
The grip of earth on outspread feet,
The life of muscles rocking soft
And smooth and moist in vernal heat.
Out of the wood two hulking tramps
(From sleeping God knows where last night,
But not long since in the lumber camps).
They thought all chopping was theirs of right.
Men of the woods and lumberjacks,
The judged me by their appropriate tool.
Except as a fellow handled an ax
They had no way of knowing a fool.
Nothing on either side was said.
They knew they had but to stay their stay
And all their logic would fill my head:
As that I had no right to play
With what was another man's work for gain.
My right might be love but theirs was need.
And where the two exist in twain
Theirs was the better right--agreed.
But yield who will to their separation,
My object in living is to unite
My avocation and my vocation
As my two eyes make one in sight.
Only where love and need are one,
And the work is play for mortal stakes,
Is the deed ever really done
For Heaven and the future's sakes.

My mom and dad are disappointed that I never finished college. They often refer to my education level as a reason for me for not having a great paying job. I always tell them I'm not the only person without a degree. So I'm asking how many of you have degrees and what type of degree do you have.
A degree certainly doesn't make you any smarter. There are plenty of people with master's degrees and doctorates who could pour pee pee out of a boot.
Personally, I like school. I didn't when I was fresh out of high school. I was a 'C' student with little or no real plans. In my early 30s I went back to school and loved it. I studied Eastern Philosophy at Christopher Newport University and would have went on to get a master's degree if I hadn't decided that I hated my high-paying corporate job enough to up and quit one day. I packed up and moved 12 time zones away and couldn't be happier.
There is certainly a lot more to life than money. That old cliche 'money can't buy happiness' is very true. Money is at the back of my priority list and I couldn't be more blissful... and, for some reason, money keeps coming in in spite of my attitude. :-)
Find out what makes you happy and try to make a living at it. Life is too short to work for a paycheck.
A degree certainly doesn't make you any smarter.
Well, yeah, it actually does. You generally learn something if even by osmosis. It won't give you good judgement or common sense but you will be smarter for the process.

Interesting thread.
I dropped out of High School but ended up going and getting my GED.
After working at many textile mills in my area(usually working my way to foreman) before they closed.I ended up getting a job that requires machining steel.
It was rebuilding machines so holding tolerance was a must on many parts, down to the .001.Learned about heat treating,welding...ect.
When the company split the shop into 2 sections I was lucky enough to go with the R&D dept.
They ended up purchasing a CNC machine that lots of folks tried to program, but had no luck.I ended up reading the books and experimenting with different programs on the machine. After some time I self taught myself to program and over time was able to do some pretty intense parts on it.
Boss liked that and sent me to learn Solid Works 3D cad drawing.I've also learned some programing for servo drives, but haven't dealt with them in some time.
Basically,if you find a job that's willing to send you to school it could be a ticket to higher pay.I know it worked for me,it will be 20 yrs at my job, come next month.
I will not kid you, sometimes I have stress knowing that without a degree it could be tough to find a job in my field. But,I guess I will have to cross that bridge when I get to it.

Knowledge is not intelligence. On the other hand; the genuine motivation to pursue it is a sign of it and a university is a decent place to look for it.
I'm a bad case of the self educated man, and it is a wonderful thing; one will learn far faster on one's own schedule as long as the desire is there but the down side is that one tends to learn only those things that interest them. If I - for example - did not have to ability to find interest in almost everything my fields of study wouldn't have become so diverse that I was statistically bound to learn some useful things along the way. Anybody can learn only those things they want to, but a structured education - formal or otherwise - is good for forcing you to study things you might not otherwise have bothered with. I've never been able to do so in a formal setting.

I do think one's education is important for life happiness, but does not necessarily equate to a high paying job. After graduating high school, my son learned to be an electrician using an OJT program. His trade has rewarded him with as much as $46/hr on some jobs - over twice as much as his dad, (a BS Magna Cum Laude University grad with 30+ yrs management experience) has ever earned. I work 6 days/wk, 60+ hrs (this week is over 70 hrs) with only 1 paid holiday/yr. - Christmas day. I'm responsible for the P&L of over 30 departments, in multiple locations, yet I get paid less than $14/hr, considering all the hours I work. If sales or profits ever drop, I'll be held responsible and could easily lose my job -so there's no job security either. It seems that once a month they add another report or duty to my workload, but I can't quit cause I'm over 50 and it will be hard to find another job at my age, plus if I miss a couple paychecks I'll be living in my camper and standing in the food stamp line.
The bottom line is find a job that makes you happy, (and pays an income you can live with) as you will be working at it (hopefully) for a very long time. Then get the necessary education to succeed in your chosen field.

A diploma (formal education) is the quickest and most reliable way to prove to someone from whom you want money (salary, fee, etc) that you are qualified to do the job. Maybe you can do it without the benefit of a formal education, but people aren't just gonna take your word for it, nor would you if you were in their position. The higher up you go, the more there is at stake, the better, more reliable proof you need to provide.
If I'm choosing surgeons, I'll consider all sorts of things but primarily, where their formal education and training came from and what their reputation for excellence among their peers and patients is. If I'm looking for auto-mechanics, I'll be, basing my choice solely on their reputation and references.
Everything else is a matter of opinion.
LetsLearnTogether - Knowledge is knowledge I don't care where it comes from. Academia, technical school, OJT, self taught. It's all good stuff. Being a self taught programmer myself I completely understand what you went through. I've never had the first class in programming but can throw up a decently designed web site in a couple of hours. I would also suggest that your attitude has probably played as big of a role as your learning. Those who want to learn and are willing to seek out the information are valued employees at any level. You're right, too, about taking advantage of company sponsored training and formal schooling. I was blessed to have a company that paid a large portion of my college education.
Canid - That was a well worded and thoughtful post. Probably as well said as anyone could. Nice job.
Chip - I'd respectfully suggest that your $14 per hour is not really the way to look at it. I assume, based on your description, that you are salaried. If that's true then the ability to take time off and still get paid is also there. I was salaried for many years and worked a lot of OT that I wasn't compensated for. Yet, I could spend time on the golf course or go to a long lunch with my wife and still get paid. I gave way more than I took in terms of hours but the perks of being salaried far outweighed the drawbacks. At least for me.

Well, yeah, it actually does. You generally learn something if even by osmosis. It won't give you good judgement or common sense but you will be smarter for the process.
reckon you have to define 'smarter' to qualify a position on the matter. Logic, reason and other forms of critical thinking are not necessarily included in all degree fields. Being able to barf out names, dates, places and stats is not what I call smarter.
If smarter means something you can use in life, then I still contend that you can sit through classes and pass tests and come out none the wiser as it applies to the real world... also known as smarter.
-
Intelligence (smartness) is, in my opinion, quite subjective. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I do think you can a degree and be still be dumb as a rock.

There is often more than one path to success. Formal education is one, for others "it's not what you know but who you blow", some are born into it and some are just standing in the right place at the right time. I tend to believe you can't keep a good man down and the cream will rise to the top. The best people always work. Whatever you do be the best at it. If there is anything you will be able take with you into eternity it will only be your pride in your work.

I find that sometimes folks never really find their niche.I've talked to,and I'm sure you all have also,to somebody in a certain job and you say to yourself,"gee, wonder what she's/he's doing here,he/she would be so much better at ....".
I mean some people have incredible"people"skills that work in sheltered jobs and vise versa.I'm one that has a rough time dealing with people,so being office bound for the day is not a big deal for me.
But back to education.I watched a program the other night that talked about the"apprentice" system coming back to life in many trades.
In some,it never did die.

Any time any work gets done at our apt. I stand and watch.
I learned by apprenticing of sorts, how to fix a running toilet, re-seat a bowl, re-caulk a tub, install a faucet, hang a light fixture, fix, prep & paint walls, and make slip covers.
And I saved a ton of money since labor is particularly expensive in NYC.

A degree can make you smarter, but not always. Also, smarter does not mean wiser. My favorite instructors are those that serve a lil wisdom with the heap of intelligence they try to stuff down your throat.
When job searching a degree does one thing, it shows your perspective employer that you are able to stick with and follow through with something, it doesn't tell them if you can do the job or get along with others. I know people without degrees that are far better programmers than I'll ever be, I also know people who are making huge money as programmers, system engineers, security consultants, etc.etc. and they can't program. How do they do it? People skills? BS artists?
We have some instructors with masters degrees and they can't even write code with VB using Visual Studio. You ask them a simple question about an "if else" statement or how to do "this" in MS Access or MS Word and they look like a deer caught in the headlights. We have other instructors that are apparently wizards of the IT world, they know so much about so many different aspects of IT, it amazes me. They all get paid the same and apparently have great job security.
Galong - I'm really not disagreeing with you. The only point I was trying to make is if you receive an education from any source and don't sleep through the classes you HAVE to pick up something. that's why I said if it's even by osmosis. That something makes you smarter. That's all.
Letslearntogether - I think your first paragraph is spot on. That's one of the reasons I preach to people that you have to sit down and develop a plan for your life. Decide what you want to do and make a plan of how to get there. Soooo many folks wake up one day, find they are 40 something and wonder what happened to their life. You don't drive to some place you've never been before without looking at a map. Why would anyone just drift on the wind and expect to end up the same place there dreams pointed to? That plan is your road map for your life.

Well I quit High School half way through my senior year... long story. A year later I went back to do my Senior year over but had to quit again. So I got a GED then got an AAS in Criminal Justice, then an AAS in Business Mangement and finally an AAS in Environmental Controls. I don't use any of them now.
Also I am the only person in my family to go to College, but my dad still gives me crap for not "Graduating" High School. He was the only person in our family to get a High School Diploma blah blah blah. Sometimes no matter what you do your parents won't be satisfied.

I quit my senior year of highschool. I had worked fulltime since 10th grade and part time before then. I went straight away and got my GED. Went to college for AWS Welding certificate and quit just before finishing. I went then to college for an AS in Eng. Graphics, quit just before I finished that. Been with the same company 20 yrs. now. Most know I work as a Quality Mgr./Mfg. Eng. that has been my job the last 8 yrs. I have no regrets...I earned a Blackbelt in Six Sigma w/out the prerequisite courses. If I had to say.... it has plagued me my whole life...I just get it, and grow bored waiting on everyone else and move on. Seems to work and if it isn't broken, I'll keep moving on!
