I think I had mentioned when our minister's daughter was jumped, raped and almost killed by some guy on a jogging trail. I can't find the thread. Anyway, here's an article today about the guy getting re-sentenced because of a technicality.

His argument for leniency, "I am living the rest of my life in prison while (the victim) is still alive," describes his mentality pretty well. Bizarre. Maybe a little prison justice will get handed out and Illinois won't have to spend a lot of time and money feeding him.
Marion, Illinois and Florence, Colorado are lock down prisons, which I think all should be. I don't know a lot about Florence but Marion has been on lock down since 1983 when three guards were killed.
Prisoners are locked in their cells 22.5 hours a day, and all standard vocational educational and recreational activities are virtually nonexistent. The cells are 8 feet by 10 feet and contain a tv, bed, toilet and sink. Prisoners are forced to sleep, eat and defecate in their cells. They are also forbidden to socialize with each other or to participate in group religious services.
Except for the T.V., that's what I'm talkin' about!

I know just enough about this guy from a friend of mine who is a jailer where he was at Lake County lockup to know he's going to end up being someone's "boy". He knows it too.
That might even be better. A taste of his own medicine.
Guys, this is the type of animal I have no sympathy for. No doubt an actual crime was committed and that he is the guilty party. There are few, if any, crimes worse. Torture is not necessarily "cruel and unusual punishment." The sentence should fit the crime. Think about that.

A good way to handle them. I personally like Sheriff Joe Arpaio's approach.

Arpaio's methods are universally applied in his county. The guys he has custody of are not hardened criminals (they're county "bids") and he applies his methods universally - even on folks awaiting trial - many of whom will be found, and actually are, not guilty.
I have this thing about "tough guys" kicking someone who's already down just for the sake of publicity.
Sorry, Ken. I'm with Crash on this one. Even if a guy is innocent, his time there isn't going to kill him (I'm talking about the facilities not other inmates). It would, however, reinforce his belief that he doesn't want to spend any more time there. I've read, though I don't know the accuracy, that the recurrence rate is rather low there.

I see what you're saying, and don't disagree completely. I agree that if somebody has not been convicted they should be afforded the presumption of innocence. I'm sure that in your line of work you see alot more than I do. It just PO's me when I see some of these news stories about the "perks" that some prisoners enjoy. Often seems as though they enjoy more privileges than those serving in our military. What I was referring to were the bologna sandwiches, tents and pink underwear.

gonna agree here. Arpaio-style prison is fine with me, but having been in and out of county a handful of times for petty stuff (often forgetting to pay a speeding ticket), it seems awful harsh.

nope, but enough schools accepted me with full disclosure and i've kept my nose clean since, so we'll see:(
from my understanding, it's generally judged less on what you did, and more on both what you've done since, and if you've been painfully honest throughout the process. i've told em everything, if they don't let me sit, there's gonna be trouble!:D

That would probably be as good some couch potatoes would have it. I wish they would open work camps. Let them raise corn the old fashioned way or glue shoes together.

He'd get to spend the winter in the pokey and of course they didn't farm in the winter so he didn't have much work to do. He was usually out by March or April when the weather turned nice. First part of genius is a plan.

He'd get to spend the winter in the pokey and of course they didn't farm in the winter so he didn't have much work to do. He was usually out by March or April when the weather turned nice. First part of genius is a plan.I saw something on the news one time where some prison had a sewing plant where the inmates would make blue leans called "Prison Blues". Apparently there was a market for them. I think inmates should earn their keep instead of laying of around like they are on vacation.

I have no problem with prison labor (not chain gangs) or no TVs in the place, or tastless (not spoiled or rotten) food or strict regimentation, order, and respect. Military style? Even better. Some people gotta' learn to speak the words "Yes, Sir."
However, when you humiliate a man or abuse him (for a minor offense - I'm not talking rape, here - and Joe ONLY gets minor offenders) you aren't doing anything positive in terms of corrections, building respect or self-respect, or rehabilitation, regardless of how it plays out to the masses on election day. Joe abuses his authority (countless politically motivated investigations) and he abuses the law. Every day. Hell, he must figure, why not just abuse the men in his custody as well.
Nope, I'm not a liberal in any sense of the word. My politics is my own, and I don't blindly follow any party lines (except for the ones Trax establishes). But I know the system and I know what I'm talking about.
Joe is the LAST guy in the world I would want covering my back in any bad situation. The man is a coward and a bully. The most dangerous kind of man there is.

The penal system in the U.S. is a joke. You have a great many people being sent up the river that are salvageable and can be rehabilitated and you have people that just can't be. They have to be separated and not tossed into the same conditions or you are turning the salvageable ones into un-salvageable. I'm not saying send them to easy street or a country club type prison, but in the end it only taxes everyone when you have the ones that can be rehabilitated, recycled through the system.
I don't know what it would take, but the entire system as is now does nothing to rehabilitate, save for maybe one or two prisons in the U.S. that are not over crowded.
What's wrong with chain gangs?
First, they're an inefficient use of labor. A man has to be able to move if he's going to work.
Second, they're humilitating to the laborers. If you want a man to work, let him at least build a little self-respect while he's on the job. Guy's not worthy of building self respect? Keep him in his cell or behind the walls where he belongs.
Third, they only play out for the benefit of those who thrive on the discomfort of others. The horns honking, the laughter, the extended middle fingers. (I've seen it all. How? One of Joe's best friends, another misguided sheriff, instituted chain gangs here in Massachusetts. Wants to be the "Second Toughest Sheriff in America." I could write volumes about this guy as well.) Really teaches a guy to respect society, doesn't it?
Fourth, chain gangs do little for "prisoner security." Make it very very clear. You want out on a work detail? Okay, you've got it. Try to escape and the first shot is aimed dead center on your back.

well what joe gets are people doing 0ne year less a day. crimes such as break and enter ,assault, drunk driving drug offenses probation violations and on and on, and like i said the only ones crying are the ones doing the time, it should not be fun to pay your dues kind of makes ya think that either next time i'll not do this or i'll run farther..

He impressed me about as much as t!ts on a boar hog and about as useful. I think it's just a matter of time before something sticks to him that he won't be able to shake off.

Got road gangs here, too. Other gangs fixing up playgrounds, helping out at food kitchens, etc. It works well, too. Even the Second Toughest Sheriff in America (he's got a pic of himself standing all excited next to Joe) has some competent people working for him who are in chargeof these programs.

How would you feel about a couple of attack dogs in case the prisoners run?
Tahyo - Illinois has a pretty wide range of prisons. From work camps up through Maximum Security like Menard, Stateville and Pontiac. Something like 8 levels of prisons depending on the violation. Not saying petty larceny won't find you in Stateville but it shouldn't. From what I remember, if you did good time you could be moved to a lower level facility (less strict). From Level 2 Secure Medium to Level 3 High Medium or something like that.
So he needs to work a little harder.

Funny how we can shut down penal farms because of unfair competition but not do the same when it comes to importing cheap Chinese junk.

Uh, I don't think that would happen. We worked in Menard pulling cable once upon a time. You had to inventory all your tools and get your hand stamped to get in and out. Anywhoooo. One of the guys had left some parts in his truck, a light rain was falling, and he took a nice jog between the main building and the front gate. He didn't realize the yelled warning was to him but da**ed sure stop cold when the warning shot hit in front of him. That afternoon all of us went through a little indoctrination about working there. Stop! apparently means everyone.

We thought it was funny as h**l the next day but I'll tell you it was a mad house around there when it happened. Our boss was on site in about 10 minutes. The officer of the guard (whatever his rank) pulled all of us in a room and gave us about a 20 minute speech. Nobody ran anywhere after that rain or not.
That was about the dam**est place I think I ever worked. Two of us and a trustee pulled cable below ground in a steam tunnel for about a week. The other tec. asked the inmate what he was in for and the inmate told us he'd killed his father and would do it again if the SOB was still alive. The other tec. stood up and walked out of the tunnel and refused to go back in. I figured if the guy wanted to kill me he would have already done it.
About three weeks after I left the inmates took over one of the cell blocks, which was directly above the tunnel we had been working in. (shivers)

Back in college a good friend decided to quite and become a prison guard. Went for his final interview at Rahway State Prison. Commented to receptionist that he thought is was nice that they recognized all the the guards by hanging their photos in the office (he told me there were about 100 or so pictures). The secretary said - Oh no dear, those are the guards that were killed in the line of duty.......he never did finish that interview.
I said earlier that Marion has been on lockdown since '83 because two of the guards had been killed. Merle Clutts was one of the guards and I worked with his son at the time his father was killed. A year later, he quit and went to work at the same prison as a guard. As far as I know, he is either still there or retired.
