I'd say the most "sound" technique for dealing with them is the sound of a Colt Python firing.

I saw a Mountain Lion about two weeks ago about 1/4 mile from my house. I was driving home at about 11:00pm and it was raining and he walked right out into the road and turned broadside to me, and I got a fantastic look at him. I had never seen a big cat in the wild prior to that.
Bears on the other hand- I see them all the time
Game wardens and their ilk have been claiming for years that there aren't any mountain lions in Manitoba. I tracked one last year, I was out in the bush outside a reservation about 3 1/2 hours northeast of here, and a couple weeks ago a couple in a small town about an hour from here got a full broadside picture of one bounding across their backyard. The picture made both the Winnipeg papers.
I thought the video was incredible! What's the odds of a camera setup at the exact moment of a bear encounter! A true learning experience.

For the life of me, I will never understand why some bears are called black.....even when their fur is clearly: BROWN http://www.geocities.com/zyskzone/SMILEY/BearCook.gif
Well, and this is quite complicated so if I lose you just let me know. The bears with brown fur are called.....brown bears. The bears with black fur are called....black bears. Those that live in the polar region are called Polar Bears. They have white fur, by the way, even though their skin is black. So you could called them black and white bears and still be technically correct. There is also the infamous Teddy bear whose fur can be any color. None of this should be confused with the bare necessities. I know, it's confusing.

This is basically what I was thinking. :D
Rick, where do you come up with all this stuff like with the bears?? Too funny!
Hey, I'm the Minister of Science. Would you expect less? The Teddy Bears are just some I own. A guy has to feel secure.

A few years ago, the DNR said there were no cougar in Minnesota. They were quickly deluged with photos from nearly every sheriff's office in the state. Three years ago, the DNR stated there were no Lynx left in the state. We quickly sent off three photos taken within a month (different animals in each photo).
It has been many years since I've seen a wolverine, though.
