I checked my butcher's price for a Clifty Farms smoked/cured country ham a while back.

$10 a pound. That sure sounds better than $60 for an unknown product.

Average ham was 15 pounds. If you are a pound a trip that would be 15 trips, or most of a camping season at 1/6 the cost.

I guess lots of folks do not know that cured ham does not need refrigeration, and are willing to pay $60 for "freeze dried" ham.

In some areas Kroger carries salt cured bacon that needs no refrigeration. Not to be confused with the packs of precooked bacon seen on the racks.

You might want to check out these guys.....#2 salt cured bacon $12 bucks.
Have used this....sorta hard to cut...and need to be soaked a while to fry up...

Does work good in bean soup and such...

I have only bought freeze dried chicken. When I did the weight (after rehydrating) equivalence, it was about equal to buying those small flexible packets of salmon or tuna. Of course, with it being freeze dried, it is a lot lighter. I used it for backpacking. By buying all the ingredients separate, including freeze dried vegies and meat, and instant rice or noodles, the end meal result is a lot cheaper than Mountain House.

Obviously when you compare it to fresh meat, or even canned meat, it is much more expensive. But, it stores for 25+ years. No canned meat will store that long. MREs don't come close to that long. Supposedly, real pemmican will do much, much longer. Pemmican is the only thing that comes close to freeze dried.... well actually it is much better. Pemmican doesn't need special equipment to make, and is probably healthier in the long run.

Canned meat most assuredly will store for 25+ years. It's the eating part that gets a bit iffy.

Grandpa never went fishing without Vienna Sausages in his tackle box. I never developed a taste for them but ate them when the day grew long. They might be forever. Potted meat was never on the menu.

Cleaning out MIL house for sale when she moved into a nursing home....
Basement pantry...she called is a fruit cellar...had canned stuff in cans and jars that she carted home when her mother died.
Didn't seem to look like anything any more....

Lehman,s informed me that they are out of the ham and now list the price as $99.99 where the catalog they sent me list the price as $59.99. Pretty fishy if you ask me, or a misprint in the catalog or other. I will not pay $99.99 for sandwich size slices of the ham. The freeze dried ham is a product of Crescent Commissary Supplies in Las Vegas NV.

Mt House is my choice also, but they do not have ham and the only just meat is the hamburger

They are local to me, so I always just walk in the store. Winco also sells their stuff here as well.

I've actually had 2 cans given to me that were the same brand. One was dried strawberries and the other was dried blackberries. They were good quality and tasted great in oatmeal and milkshakes. The plastic lid on the can was a nice touch so once you open the can you can snap the lid back on and sit it back on the shelf.

tactical bacon i saw it on the web it's 1,lb of sliced cooked bacon i think yoders sells it as well.

I've tried the "tactical bacon" and its actually pretty good. It way too expensive for my blood though. I'd rather stock up on canned ham and/or Spam. You can even get a bacon flavored Spam this is pretty good.

Bacon Spam is sort of like a knife with a scope. Like either one alone but together it's sort of sacrilege.
