About 3 or 4 years ago our Minister's 18 year old daughter was jogging in one of the local forest preserves near here. We have never had any problems in the past. Anyway, some a-hole jumped out of the bushes, raped her and tried to cut her throat. She was smart enough to play dead and he left. He didn't quite do the the job correctly and she is o.k. physically and very surprisingly has recovered fairly well mentally.
The guy got caught, was a repeat offender and got convicted. Unfortunately Illinois does not have a CCW law.

Do your minister a favor. Visit the prison regularly and get to be friends with the meanest inmates there. Then get them to do you a favor.

Not being able to CCW. Once incident is not reason to leave an area. There are always going to be jack*sses like that around. However, not having the ability to legally carry a concealed weapon is definitely a deal breaker for me. If I had known about San Antonio's knife laws I wouldn't have moved here either.

My house is paid for. Real estate prices are crap. I'm a member of the NRA and have been for 20 years and "reasonably" support some of their issues when it pertains to my state. I'm 53 years old with a wife and 2 sons so established that moving is completely out of the question. I do occasionally carry when I/we have to go somewhere that I am uneasy about.
Moving ain't going to happen.
Why is it that "repeated offender" is so often the label on these idiots? When do we figure out that rehabilitation doesn't work with predators?

It has to be something in the brain. I read so many times where some of these idiots do things that defy common sense. It's my personal belief that child molesters and rapists should be taken out and executed once found guilty and once the appeals process is done. The appeals process has to be sped up, but it never will be.
The sexual predator thing has to be revised. You have a lot of cases where these teenage boys and girls are dating each other and one may be 18 and the other may be 16 or 17, with consensual relations and you have some parent getting pissed and pressing charges. I'm not saying that there are cases that should not be prosecuted, but there are so many of these young kids getting life long tags of "sexual predator" hung on them for b.s. reasons.

This really PO's me that women cannot safely go alone on trails and such. They all should be packing, so that these guys have something to think about before they attempt such things.

That's why it's so important IMO that we work to get CCW laws passed everywhere. I think it was Rick that posted about a string of car jackings, where finally they jacked the wrong car. Jackings stopped. Same thing would happen if these predators didn't feel they had an easy target.

I do agree with "leave the ipod at home". One of the first laws of self defense is know your surroundings. Know what's going on. You can easily get lost in a song and drowned out any noise a perpetrator might make coming up behind you. Just that one act, leave it at home, might be enough to save your life.

drashdive123, I agree with you. We need to get the CCW laws passed. Last two states are IL and WI. In WI, we can't even posess "non-leathal" weapons like stun guns. Governor Jim Doyle must be voted out!!!

I don't know how successful Wi. will be at getting a ccw passed, but in Illinois it's doubtful it will ever get passed. This has been a Dem. run state seemingly forever and it's not likely to change anytime soon. It's all we can do to hold on to what rights we do have.

I think no one wants to feel bad about violating their rights or something. I don't think they have rights after something like that.

I guess I am an habitual criminal. I carried illegally in NYC, D.C., Baltimore, Boston and all points N,S & W. I vote for a tall tree and a short rope for most of them, and a child molester, well I would enjoy "rehabilitating" them myself. Tahyo, I agree with a lot of what you say here, like "where these teenage boys and girls are dating each other" but not all of it.
Plain and simple, many people just don't get a fair or honest trial. I could write a book about this, and my comments below barely scratch the surface about what's wrong with our legal system.
Start with lousy lawyers, witnesses and cops who commit perjury, false "expert testimony," eye-witnesses who really believe they picked up the right guy when they didn't (eye-witness testimony is legendary in its innaccuracy) and a host of hundreds of other reasons. Then you get those who scream rape when it was totally consentual. Consider that even innocent people "confess" due to improper interrogation techniques - even in the USA.
Polygraph tests, highly accurate but not perfect, are excluded from evidence. I say polygraph the victim, witnesses, and defendant (if he/she testifies) and let all the results into evidence. In most cases, there's nothing like a polygraph test to smoke out liers.
Rape Shield laws, although well intended, can go so far as to prevent a jury from learning that a "rape victim" has two dozen prior convictions for prostitution. This is not to say that a former prostitute can't be raped -- of course she can. But the jury should be able to learn about her background -- and most often, it's excluded from evidence, even when the defense is based upon an act of prostitution "gone bad." It is kind' of relevant, isn't it?
Can't tell you how many times I've caught the "victim" in so many lies on the witness stand thay they finally broke down and admitted the entire allegation was bullsh*t to begin with. Other times, the story is so unbelievable that the jury takes just minutes to acquit. But, even with acquital, the defendant's life is ruined or set back a decade.
Yep, kids lie, too, even when they say "He touched me." Loads of reasons why, like when mommy and daddy are going through a break-up or a divorce. A false rape allegation can be as good as dropping a royal-flush on the card table. Kids are easily "brainwashed" and can be very graphic and consistent in describing things that never happened. With kids, DNA cases, with accurate testing and review by the defense, are pretty much "slam-dunk", but most often DNA never comes into play.
Appeals are almost always rubber stamps of convictions. Appeals courts usually won't overturn "findings of fact" - i.e., determinations as to who was telling the truth.
Think about how many convitions get vacated after someone has spent decades in prison for a crime they didn't commit. In my heart, I know that there are thousands of guys, good people, now serving long prison sentences for crimes thay didn't commit.
Nope, I'm not a bleeding heart liberal. I don't believe that a true sexual predator can ever be rehabilitated. If I knew, WITH ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY, that someone had raped another person, especially a child, I would have no reservations about using torture, imposing the death penalty, or simply turning the guy over to the victims family to let them decide what to do.
It's just that may people labeled as predators or felons really are not, and that could happen to almost any of us.:(

I understand what you mean, Rick, but this puts us all on thin ice. Either we have Constitutional protections or we don't.
Yep, if someone is in jail, they obviously have no right to carry a gun. This prohibition can reasonably be extended to those on probation as a term and condition of probation as well. However, once someone has served his/her time and is done with parole or probation, they should have a full restoration of their Constitutional rights. Just make the sentence and probationary/parole time fit the crime. Yep, even lifetime probation may be in order in many cases.
To say that everyone convicted of a crime loses a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT forever is wrong. Example of this wrong: The 45 year-old-guy who cannot get a license to carry only because he was convicted of operating under the influence of alcohol when he was 17. But, that's the law here. OUI is a felony, and convicted felons don't get LTC's.
Why do I say this? Because depriving someone of a Constitutonal Right (Second Amendment included) by way of legislation is a dangerous precedent. If you want to ban convicted felons from carrying a gun, amend the Constitution to provide that "Anyone convicted of a felony shall no longer have the right to keep and bear arms." That protects the rest of us, in a large way, from being at the mercy of legislators who would deprive us of our rights for any reason they choose.

Ditto on child predators as well. We had one down the street that was forced to move last year because he rented a house that backed up to a park. It's a no-no here. He tried to fight it, but this entire neighborhood tossed their dogs in that fight and the guy finally realized it was a lost cause.

yeah, but not everybody is a rapist or child molester, as was already covered. a lot of guys and girls get the label slapped on them unfortunately for things that were consenual. I think the "slightly over 18" thing was covered, but there's also the girls who cry rape after getting busted sleeping with someone, etc. etc. Statutory cases are also prosecuted as sex offenses.
Right on target, Sapper. The predator label is stuck on far too many people. For the ones that deserve it, Hell is too good a place to send them.
Rick's right about the predators as far as I can tell. I've done some work with the justice system and I've seen so many of them get early parole because they did some 'counseling' courses while they're on the inside. Of course they're going to tell the counselors whatever they want to hear in order to get out, they're perverts--not idiots. As soon as they're back on the street, the old habits or whatever the hell it is kick in. I've even seen cases where these guys get mandatory parole (2/3 of the full sentence) and have refused any kind of counseling while they're in. Someone has to b*tch slap some sense into the people on the parole boards or whoever creates their mandates for them. I think with the technology today, the courts can ensure that someone is absolutely guilty and when that's the crime, put them out of our misery. I can think of places I'd rather see my tax dollars getting spent than on feeding and trying to rehabilitate child abusers.
On the flip side of the coin: In my job, too, I have to run criminal record checks on job applicants and I get back this lovely response, it's either yes or no they have a CR. Well, if it's some poor schmoe who got into a scrape in a bar when he was 18 and has lived a normal life since then, I don't want to cr@p on his chances, but that's all the info I get from the gov't. I generally try to get them to talk to me about it, but I have to tread softly too, I could be setting myself up for a lawsuit.I know a woman in her 50's who's been down that road. Went and got a post-secondary education, qualified as a nurse and has been turned down for jobs for something that happened when she was 19 and she's been a clean, sober and a very spiritually inclined individual ever since the incident..over 30 years ago.
