Hey all, its been a long while since I spent any time on the forum. However, since I recently just joined the 21'st century and got internet hooked up at my home, I plan on being around a little more. not that I've been missed.:tongue_smilie:

Anyway, I just received a notification that its time for me to renew my Backwoodsman magazine subscription. Given how much I enjoy this publication I thought I'd look around and see what other offerings there were along the same lines. I have several issues of American Frontiersman that, although not as good (in my eyes) as Backwoodsman it was still a nice read. A quick search told me that this publisher is no longer in business.

Which led me to Self Reliance Illustrated. Also no longer in print, but the option to buy all the issues in PDF for very little money is tempting, so my question is this...Is it worth it? I'm not at all familiar with it, but I knew just where to go to get an opinion on the subject.

Also, if anyone knows of a magazine that falls into what I'm looking for I'd love to know. (I'm already familiar with Modern Pioneer, basically an attempt at Backwoods Home)

Thanks.

Welcome back! I did miss you! I would suggest that given the very reasonable price, why not. Information is never a waste.

22 issues for 3.99 is not bad at all, they are just like the paper magazines but digital, a lot of information and even the same color pages as the magazines.
Thanks Hunter for posting the information. Now I got something to read on rainy or snow days, best part is I don't need a bookshelf to store them and the price is right.

You don't need a kindle if you have a computer to read Kindle books, you can use your computer or laptop.

I'm old fashion and like to turn pages, everything in life is a trade-off, digital price $3.99 and get it in an instant but can not feel the texture of paper; real magazines Subscription is $26.00, you have to wait for it to come to your mailbox - maybe on time unless your mailman likes to read your magazines, or buy one issue for $7.99 and you still have to wait http://www.self-reliance.com/shop/backissues/winter-2016/ buy 22 paper issues and pay a fortune have to pay for shipping and that will cost you an arm and leg and hope you get them in one piece. This is a good deal.

I find it hard to read much of anything longer than couple of paragraphs on a screen........But that just me.
That said...you are correct....shipping for back issues or an archive collection... really make that expensive.

Agree PFD's...or even CD/DVD are the way to go.

Hunter, we are off by a year on age (I'm 69 years old), I used to wear glasses but I love shooting/target practice and with bifocal glasses it was a pain in the rear so I went with contacts, and I'm sorry I didn't do that years ago. You must be working out of a computer or laptop of some sort, what I did was about tree years ago I bought a TV that I was able to connect my laptop to it via USB port, so if you have a TV with a USB port you have it made. F4 (top row of keys) will get you on the TV screen, mine is 38" TV screen and there is no small print that you can not see, you can see this forum or do any Kindle books (including the free ones) without the need of a kindle and you can read any books with real ease, and you can see anything in color if that is the format not like the Kindle black & white.
My apologies for getting off the topic but maybe someone may benefit from the above information.
Mike

How/where do you find a new keyboard for a laptop?

Amazon has them, here is a load of them to pick from https://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Alaptop%20keyboard and if you don't want to wait or pay shipping and you have a Walmart near by, they have them too.

corner is held on by Gorilla Glue

Now that right there is funny I don't care who you are.

I just pictured 30 Chinese each with a big bottle of Gorilla glue putting keyboards together.

New thread???

What!!! You think fixing your own computer is not a true display of Self Reliance?

Seems like the best one around in this day and age. You are fixing your keyboard so you can read books about self reliance, how much more self reliant can you get?

My repair was easier than shown in the video.

I just had to take out the battery and pop out the keyboard like a Lego block, disconnect the electronic coupling and plug in the new one, snap the keyboard back in.

Took about 3 minutes and no gorilla glue was involved.

Not kidding......Glue and clamps.....of course there is some kind of plug that I have never used.....well can't use it now
for sure.

Now that I threatened to switch the keyboard out.....the letters V.H.N......are back working again....
So that there, is proof that cuss words DO work...in the proper order and delivery..... Repair by cussing....

That, sir, is just outstanding. Truly. Just outstanding!! :crash:

And why is it that Gorilla glue never expands when you want it too but does every time your back is turned?

hunter63
12-02-2016, 08:53 PM
Yeah, was kinda dicey getting it wet so the glue would work.....LOL.....

Looks bad but machine still works.....used the gorilla glue, because the super glue and duck tape wouldn't hold....was a part fell out...looks like part of the hinge.

Last time I had it to the Geek Squad....they listed the condition as..."Operational, but poor shape"

Maybe list it under "There, I fixed it"?
