Sitting back; I see a lot of areas where changes would be a good thing.
A depression does not have to be a bad thing.
The cost of repairing the train lines would be achievable. Heck now the labor costs alone would be outrageous and probably the reason they are not being repaired. The damns could be built! The Nuck plants could be built. Housing costs would come down and a stable economy could be reached!
The family would come back and Moms staying home to take care of the kids might be reached. Right now a friend of mine has to work because her hubby only makes $25 an hour! The $1200 a month in house payments and $750 car payment along with all the other expenses that a working mother brings, is the usual for familys these days. Kids would not having to take care of themselves and parents that are too busy and wrapped up in their carriers to be willing to pay attention to their kids could be removed as an excuse for the way some kids act these days!
I see where jobs would come back because labor costs would come down.
What I would like to see is Kids that are not able to behave in school or those that fall 2 and 3 years behind would not have to return to school. Only those willing to do the work or able to do the work would be allowed to attend school. The baby-sitting service would be over. Special Education would be taught at home. And what is with this Special Edu category. When I was growing up they were the slow students. Oh we do not want to make them feel bad because they are (insert politically correct, as you want, description) Slow! < (Being nice)
Parents would take responsibility for the actions of their kids! The right to an education would be reserved for those that would and could benefit from the time, energy and expense of teaching them.
This goes for those that do not speak English or (insert politically correct description) Not from this country. California would save millions a year doing this!
Dads could work and make enough money to support their families. Maybe not as well as they want but the feeling that everyone has a right to have the newest, best, latest gadget would be a thing of the past. That you would not grab plastic without thinking about what you need and not what you want. Meals would be home cooked and the grab something at the fast food place on the way home would be a thing of the past. Better diets and better health. There would be fewer fat asses blaming their eating habits on Mc Ds and the like.
I could go on for hours about the benefits of a depression in the USA! Would I survive a depression? Probability not. But that too could be a blessing. Those that do not survive would make room for those that can.

Don, Something is coming, and it is coming like a freight train wide open. Most people know something is coming. We don't know what it is but we feel it's nearness. One of the things I notice is people are selling all there stuff. And raising cash reserves. People I know are selling everything they don't need, and going to cash.
It is strange how people are getting ready to ride out a unknown storm. People do not talk of Depression, or even recession, nor runaway Inflation, they are just getting ready for some unknown something.
A Depression is a horrible thing to experience. I wish we could milk 12 to 15 more years out of the current "Illusion".

We have an oil based economy. Bring down the cost of oil and watch for a fast turn around. However, even if we started now on fixing the problem we are years away from enjoying the benefits. I think folks are starting to realize this and they know it's going to take most of what they have to keep their head above water.

I also think our politicians were too self centered to see what was coming. Now that it is here they point fingers at everyone except themselves and that's for the ones who feel it. There are politicians who are in denial.
Cash is king. There will be some good deals on material things. Just wait it will get better.

I am not predicting the end of the world. I am saying things are going to get harder then any alive now, can remember, it ever being. There is a time coming when what we make and what we spend to live day to day are balanced. A time we will learn to do without or make do rather then going into debt. We will start doing for our selves rather then paying someone else to do it for us.
At this time a young man just out of high school cannot afford to make a living. The $8 or $10 an hour he would make will not allow him to live, much less as he wants. This is partly the fact he has lived in the want now, get now and worry about how to pay for it later life style, he was taught. Part is the expense of covering the rising costs that he has to deal with.
The changing Bankruptcy laws were the start of it. Now the average Joe cannot just walk away from his debts. He is made to take responsibility for his wanton ways. It is affecting the business sector too. More laws are coming and not too far in the future. This is a good thing.
There is no balance between what it costs to live and what is in a paycheck. I have to agree with Dan. The US is not an oil-based economy. The world is! The USA is a credit-based economy... Who of us do not have a house or car payment? Who of us pays cash for everything we need or want?
The cost of Oil does affect our daily lives. The $30 I spent on the 1/4 tank of gas means; I will not be running around without thinking about what it will cost to fill the tank, if I run it down near empty. I now do not just hop into the truck and take off. I plan my trips. I now budget it into my income when I never had too before.
For me, C cards all have become a thing of the past. Well I gave them up over 7 years ago and adjusted my spending habits. I have gone from the, I want this so I’ll get it, to planning ahead before I buy. I am doing more of the things I used to pay others to do.
Before the Rice scare how many people had a pantry? Most of the family’s I know were shopping week to week. Running down to the store for things, as they needed them. More and more people are now keeping their cupboards full or at least fuller then they used too. This is a good thing.

Don, Stay the course, your on the right road. It still will not be fun, but it will be less painful. Ever so slowly other people are starting to see the light. I just don't get why it is so hard for some to see that just maybe, the party is over. I'll bet when they start reducing pension payments by 33% some people are going to get on board. When more cities file Bankruptcy people will get on board. When the tax base drops because assessed values are down 53% and no Country wants to bid on your cities bonds, people will get on board. When the Yuppies start seeing their 401K statement drop month after month.............Where are my rose colored glasses, that's better, "Nothing but blue skies from now on".:)

AW ,It ain't all that bad around here. If I thought it was I would walk up to the local funeral home and get my 15% discount for walk-ins and the extra 5% for not coming to pick me up. I don't get excited anymore, just stay prepared some.

We're not an oil based economy? What do you have that was not produced with oil in some way or another? If gas was 75 cents a gallon would your life be easier or harder?
Could you afford more or less? Credit or not.

I think you are right and most folks just don't to admit it. The big picture is that America is not the only big dog on the porch anymore. As somebody else's standard of living gets a little better our standard of living will get a little worse. I don't believe America will turn into another third world country during my life time but it is being filled up with third worlders that don't expect much out of life and do not contribute much to the economy as a whole.
Things are going to get harder. I think we have already seen the best times in America. I don't know how bd it will get but I believe the goods times are over for a long time.

How did boomer's parents survive during and just after WWII? Those of us boomers that still have our parents around ought to ask them how they survived. I am sure that there is a lot of information about the Great Depression out there in libraries and on the internet. The Greatest Generation (a book by T. Brokaw) is a collection of how it was during WWII. I have glanced through that book (not read it entirely) but seems to be an omnibus of war stories and about the people that lived them. There might be some gems of wisdom in those pages about how it was done. I have been meaning to get around to reading that book and should do that this summer.
Anyway, I have always been an advocate of taking advantage of resourses and we have that generation as a resourse now.
I read it cover to cover twice. You can not read that book and not be in tears, tears of pride, tears of awe, tears of respect. You can not read that book and not be humbled to live on the same earth with such greatness. Every high school student should be compelled to sit as someone reads the book to them. (because most can not read).

I live pretty simply.
Did you ever stop to think that it's always been this way for some folks? Those who live on a fixed income? Those who don't make enough to get from payday to payday? You don't hear them saying the end is around the corner. They've been living day to day for ever. Pick any decade you want and you'll find folks who have experienced SHTF and it wasn't the end for them. It was tough and they chugged on.
This down cycle is nothing more than a matter of perspective. If you have something you are afraid you are going to lose it. If you had nothing to start with it's just harder. Just another day. I can show you tons of seniors that have been giving something up just to live and the last few months had nothing to do with it. I'm tempted to say stop whining but I won't. Go to a hospice and volunteer some time. Go to a nursing home and volunteer some time. Or a food bank or a hospital. See what kind a problems people are really dealing with really that are horrendous. Then go back home, look in the mirror, thank God you aren't one of them and be thankful for what you have.
Always be prepared but realize your end is someone else's beginning and vice versa.

Hello everyone, I am the new guy here. Being a past peace officer and having both buddies still in and family the issues we need to look at is also from within. When things start popping in the big cities and people can't make it any longers, water issuse , money race etc. they will be coming to the smaller areas, with this one needs to always remember they will be looking at what you and your family has as theirs.
Prep now, we are seeing a surge now on the coast

She's my first wife, I decided to finally promote her. We just had our first month anniversary yesterday. I know this aint the romance forum, but i just can't help but brag (a little)

As a newlywed, I caution you to brush up on the female definitions of a few words and phrases:
(1) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.
(2) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes are only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.
(3) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.
(4) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!
(5) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.)
(6) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a woman can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.
(7) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or Faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome' ... that will brings on a 'whatever').
(8) Whatever: Is a women's way of saying ____ YOU!
(9) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to # 3.
