Boy scout Flint and Steel

The BF and I were wandering an antique shop the other day, and I found a vintage Boy Scout flint and steel fire starter kit for $10. It even had some of the original tinder and 2 pieces of actual flint, not a ferro rod or firesteel.

Debating on weather or not to give it to my grandson, who is a bear cub this year.

It's been a while since those were made. If you want to get him a BSA fero rod as well they are pretty inexpensive and small enough for cubby fingers.

My son has a " non vintage" BSA flint and steel kit. They are very functional, just needing a little char cloth to round it out. Kids love these things. I would recommend a pair of safety glasses to go with it, kids tend to get rock chips flying while learning.

Rick, I have already gotten him this one, I have been adding to his camping backpack since he joined and have gotten him two different feo rods for his kit. When my son in scouts the unit had all the camping gear that was needed, get this, a whole trailer full of scout gear left from days gone by when the scout troop had at one point died out, and this fella had this stuff in his possession all those years and never got rid of it. He turned it over to us when we did a scout drive to revive the troop, the man came to the meeting and turned over the trailer. ( That was in Scott County, that trailer and it's contents was stolen from that troop a couple of years ago, they are still trying to raise money to replace those items.).

I am currently working on a first aid kit for my grandsons backpack as well It will not be Scout issue, but it will have items in it I think necessary in a small kit.

No date. Been trying to research it, found it online but now can not find that site again. Surely there is a Boy Scout Museum...ish site somewhere.

Nell, I can't give you an exact date but the ones in plastic are from the 60's. They made a set that was in a cotton bag. Those are from the 40's and 50's. I have no idea what they were in before the 40's.

This is what I bought at summer camp in 1969. Still have it but not the box. The "tinder" was/is tow (as in the left overs from making thread from the Flax plant)
