I searched the forums and found couple of threads with some general comments about shelters. Are there good sites with pics about different shelter types? There's some in the google, and of course in different shows but... let's see whaddowehavehere :)

Liked this one quite a bit. Clear pics, clear instructions:

Hey sand,

I have done this a bit myself and here is what I recommend and has worked well for me.

Gather the following materials:
6 tent stakes (the cheap ones are fine)
6 one inch carabiners
100 ft of paracord
6 guy line tensioners ( I like these http://www.amazon.com/Liberty-Mountain-Aluminium-Guyline-Adjuster/dp/B008Y5GO58 )
2 tarps (1- 8'x10' and 1- 10'x12)
4- 3' poles
2- 4.5' poles (I made my poles using treated 2x2 and pounding 6" nails into each end)

And this isn't necessary but I found a grommet kit helpful to add a few holes in the tarps. The total for everything if you had to go and buy it should be less than $50 and most of it can be had at harbor freight.

Next, find resources about all kinds of shelters and try them in the back yard with your gathered materials. You'd be surprised how easy a lot of them are. The best way to learn is to just go and do. If you have kids, it is a fun project to do with them. It is always great to find a way to spend time with the kiddos!

Are talking debris shelters, or tarps....

Debris shelters, depend on available materials, location, and season.

...the "Ye olde Home Page." That's taken from the U.S. Army field manual. Note the hollow handled survival knife. Right now some nube is probably drooling all over their monitor looking at it!....:2:

Books came today.....putting me in the mood for a gypsy wagon or caravan again.....
I love Lloyd Kahn books a LOT.

Shelters, Shacks and Shanties is a FUN read....written and illustrated in 1914, when there were still large enough forest that one could cut birch bark off a tree and not go to jail.

D.C. Beard the wrote it aimed at Boy Scouts, was involved in the formation of BSA, as well as other boys pioneer organizations.
It assumed that boy of 1914 were allowed to carry and use knives and axes...

E book....
