What kind of bug is this?

Someone sent this photo to my girlfriend to show me in hopes of finding out what this bug is. It looks like a tick but I've never seen one that bright red. She says its small like a tick. They live in West Virginia. Anyone know?

Sorry for not checking back for so long, been busy doing Red Cross training. A red spider mite looks right to me, I'll pass that info along to the friend in West Virginia.

Its a velvet mite.

It mite be a velvet mite and it mite be a spider mite (I slay myself).

I'm going with red velvet mite. Red spider mites don't make 1/2mm in length and I surely could be wrong but that looks to be bigger. A scale in the pic would have helped.
