I was reading this survival book yesterday and was reading a good story in it. Around 1944 these Japanese soldiers hid from the Americans on the island on Guam with nothing but there guns and clothes. A few hid for 20 to 30 years. They would find a cave deep in the jungle and survive off of snails, coconuts, rats. Because of the tropical weather there (a range of 68 to 90 degrees) they never in danger of freezing to death. A few did die of malaria though. The most famous soldiers who hid were these two - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoichi_Yokoi and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroo_Onoda.

Heres an article on them http://www.primitiveways.com/jungle_30_years.html

Tunick - We've posted on this before but I couldn't find the thread. Anywhoooo. It wasn't just Guam. It occurred in a dozen countries.

I actually have one hiding out in my back yard. He's just so darn helpful with the gardening and landscaping, I don't have the heart to tell him about the whole Nagasaki/Hiroshima thing....

Bet they were real "close" friends after awhile. I had two uncles in the Pacific and it was hard to believe the stories they told. Lots of pics taken, seen some and sure wouldn't want to have been there.

The real reason Trax won't give him up is he likes the crisp clean shirts.

I'm thinking somewhere in the world is a whole group of people rolling in the floor laughing at Crash's post and we don't get it.

I did a homestay in Japan when I was in college. the family I lived with was from Osaka, and they were in the house where one of the grand parents grew up. They showed me their fallout shelter (read cave) that they hid in during the bombings.

They used little startch on their shirts, but man, were they pressed nicley!
