The tutorials I have presented so far have been for diamond shape meshes. Sometimes square shape meshes are called for, for instance: tennis and volleyball nets. Here is how they are made.

Tie two meshes into a support loop. Leave a short tail (on left) to finish net.

In the following rows tie into each mesh of the previous row until the desired width is met (measured from A to B)

Net across without making the extra mesh

Net across , tie the extra mesh and tie a colored yarn to remind you that you will be tying an extra loop each time you get to this side of the net.

Net across and tie the last two meshes together. This forms the second corner of the net.

Net across - don't forget to tie the last two meshes together.

When you get to the desired length - see A previous row tie two meshes together at the end of each row.

Tie the last two meshes together with a double sheet bend - no gauge

Untie the support loop and with the tail you left at the beinning tie the first two meshes together with the double sheet bend. trim the ends and you are done.

The square mesh net described in Part ! has sides that alternate 2 and 3 strands. Here is a square mesh net that alternates 1 and 2 strands
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/asemery/squarenet.jpg

Here is how it is done. I learned this technique in "Netmaking" by Percy Blanford.
1. Place cord twice around gauge and tie overhand loop.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/asemery/squaremeshtutorial001.jpg
2. Position overhand knot halfway up the loop and tie into bottom loop. This is the beginning of the chain start.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/asemery/squaremeshtutorial002.jpg
3. Tie into A (above photo). Notice that support position for the net has shifted to left. See photo below.

4. Tie Half Hitch at botttom of mesh (A - above photo) and then reposition net so that support is at top. It should now look like below photo.

5. Tie into meshes 1 and 2 above (after flipping the net so you tie left to right) Should now look like photo below.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/asemery/squaremeshtutorial005.jpg
6. Shift support position as you did at end of previous row. Tie into A and tie half hitch at bottom af loop (as you did in previous row). Flip net so you are working left to right. Should now look like photo below.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/asemery/squaremeshtutorial006.jpg
7. Now tie into meshes 1,2 and 3 and side mesh A (above photo). Tie half hitch as before. Should now look like photo below.
8. Shift position so that support is at top and tie another half hitch at bottom of mesh (A - below photo). We are beginning to close net.

9. Tie into 3 meshes. Should look like photo below.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/asemery/squaremeshtutorial008.jpg
10. Tie half hitch at A (above) and into 2 meshes. Should look loke photo below.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/asemery/squaremeshtutorial009.jpg
11. Tie half hitch at A and then into single mesh to complete net.

I know that this is from another set of instructions but it shows how to tie the half hitch. Tony

I meant to post these 2 parts in the tutorials section. Could some moderator please move them there. I can only say I must have had a big senior moment. Thanks. Tony

Here are a couple of videos showing how to tie the netting knot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ensL0Mwboew&feature=player_embedded
shows how to tie the netting knot in the traditional way.

http://tinypic.com/usermedia.php?uo=adkBqYNLltvp0bOJVdJFYIh4l5k2TGxc# .U-a-IoK41_Q
shows me demonstrating the "tatting" method. It was taken by my apprentice at a folklife festival. For the first few seconds I am undoing a mistake made by a festival spectator.
Once you have mastered tying the netting knot the tutorials for specific projects can be followed. The same knot is used throughout. If you have any specific questions, please ask. Tony
