most but not all people when camping carry every thing in thier packs.
some wear a rig of sorts most dont, why there,s many reasons. i allways have
more gear on your waist and chest is less on your back.besides if you for whatever lost the pack youstill have the ESSENTIALS,cookset, ifak, snares, fish, sewingkits, canteens, hygene items, food, knife and fire
starterkit and bivy sack, hammock, for your three seasons.energy bars can be stuffed everywhere.

just a few thoughts on camping/bugout.

Always wondered why vest weren't more popular for all around hunting and hiking.
I use a turkey vest, and it does have a good selection of gear besides shells........ turkey calls, chalk, head nets gloves, bug spray, hand warmers, TP, lip balm.......poucho, decoy, fold down seat.

Now add in fire stuff, FAK, thermos/w metal cup.... Mora, multi tool, pruning shears two big garbage bags.....and lately cameo umbrella/blind.

All carried with hands free, and spread out so as to not bind at your waist while sitting.

Haven't really transferred to hiking and camping yet....But can see some real advantages.

BTW these hunting type of vest is not a tactical/Swat/combat, or armored type vest.......Just hunting/hiking and camping.

This isn't mine....but kinda looks like it.

Well I have a Columbio XCO vest and also a 5.11 tactital vest. I fancy the Columbia more due to its material and lightweight. I managed to put it only essentials like a first aid kit, a firestarter and tinder, signal mirror, some Nature Valley snacks,a pack of MRE with the Sea to Summit Tarp Poncho in the back slot, a compass , a gps, fishing kit, some paracords (plus I also have a paracord bracelet with 15 feet of cordage and a paracord belt with 100 feet of cordage, and some aluminum foils and non lubricated condoms...taht works where I am situated.

I tried vests. Its too hot even with the mesh ones. I wear cargo pants and essentials on my belt. Then a day backpack.

I used to put in 13 miles in a day with a "full" back pack to hike and camp. These days we may pull a 3 mile walk, 5 miles is unusual.

I do not use them for long hikes...its more of a take from the pack and load the vests and when I am scouring the nearby area from my base camp. I use them in the highlands.
The materials are nylon like, more of OMNI Dry..the back has a inner mesh and when you remove the outer rear,,it shows only the mesh back. Its very liteweight and the same material as my other OMNI Dry Columbia shirts and pants...Its not hot and very comfy.

I have it on good authority that both chipmunks and squirrels prefer mollie gear.

Being a southern boy and still remembering the 1980s I have a difficult time with vests.

I would rather carry a bag than wear more pockets.

As I have gotten older and my back sorer, I find myself wearing vests more and more; from concealed carry to fleece for warmth to a Cabela's hunting vest Orange or camo for outdoor activities.

Hi. I have to agree. I have arthritis and a dodgy knee and have found that using Ribz front packs/or chest rigs and webbing I can spread the weight better, Keep more often used gear at hand and keep myself walking in the woods that I love a little longer! Like most ways of carry, once I got used to where the items are and keep them in the same place all the time, finding things is easier for me than taking my day sack off and rooting around to locate something.

End of the day its personal choice and what works best for you and your situation.

I have a really nice chest pack that I got from someone here in our Christmas exchange. I 'm getting another one to use on my canoe expedition next summer. I want one for me and one for my sister. You know, just in case we get dumped, I want her to have a whistle and firestarter at the minimum.
