I ran across this web site and thought it was pretty clever.

I recommend setting that can on fire first. Start a hot fire in it to burn the the coatings and galvinized finish off or youll have a bad taste to whatever your cooking.

Here's one out of a Terra Cotta pot:

http://www.twothirds.org/2005/09/26/smoking-pot-a-cheap-terracotta-flower-pot-smoker-ala-alton-brown/

Alton Brown originally did this (as the page states) on "Good Eats". He explained the benefit of using terra cotta. Don't remember the details. Kinda cool though.

Good Discussion on it here:

I've seen a lot of things use for smoking stuff. Some of it pretty inventive. Old refrigerators and freezers are probably at the top of the list for most of the people I know down south that haven't built one.

Old refrigerators make awesome keg coolers. Run the line through the front door, attach the pull handle. Set the keg inside and enjoy cold beer.

Could be because the thread is three years old.

Please tell me that you read and understand the post about burning off any coatings. That galvanized stuff is nothing to play with. Ask anyone who has welded the stuff.

Yeah I was wondering bout that,, but didnt see anything in the op/link about it,,, figured it didnt get hot enough to be a problem using that heat element instead of fire...

Being a welder before the service, galvanized metal is not fun stuff. I would wear a ventilated hood to weld anything galvanized, otherwise I would be sick for a couple days. Though Zinc Oxide, the result of zinc fumes mixing with oxygen, is not toxic the zinc fumes will make you sick. Zinc Oxide is actually deemed Generally Recognized as Safe by the FDA as a food additive. It is most often found in breakfast cereal as a Zinc enrichment. Zinc melts at about 900°F and vaporizes at about 1650°F. So I would say using a galvanized trash can to smoke in would not cause any problems. It will probably outlast a painted model, since the paint always peels eventually. Now the only other issue would be the type of Zinc bath the can received as some have lead in the mix.
