Hi -

Just wondering if anyone has recommendations for good post-apocalyptic fiction. I found this thread:

http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?t=120&highlight=fiction

but wanted to see if there were any more suggestions. I've got shelves and shelves of how-to and other non-fiction books dealing with self-sufficiency and survival skills. I just like to "escape" every once in awhile with some good fiction and see how different authors choose to represent their ideas of what it would be like if there were big changes in our society.

Right now, I'm reading "Oryx and Crake" by Atwood and I am finding it a little creepy. I've recently read:

"The Parable of the Sower" by Butler (really good!)
"I am Legend" (the original)
"The Road" by McCarthy

and a bunch of others that I didn't really keep track of. I also read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" which, while non-fiction, really made a difference in how I think about food and choose what to eat.

Anyone got some suggestions?

lol. You want post apocalyptic fiction, huh? Haven't read any of these in years...I was like 10 or so when I found my dad's copy and read it on the sly....Anyway, the series starts with "Out of the Ashes" written by William W. Johnstone. There's 20+ sequels to the first one. I never made it past the second or third. My "creative writing" for school started drifiting towards post-apocalyptic scenarios describing the smell of the burning corpse's, etc. etc. My mom got rid of the rest of the series my Dad had :D Probably a pretty good explanation of why I'm so twisted now. Anyway, the first book I know is good.

I read that whole series, I don't believe that Mr. Johnstone likes the government very much. lol. I read the rewrite with Clinton in the 90's and was not happy with it. I see it on the shelves at bookstores now.

Is it a re-write? I was looking for a copy of it after I posted that just to revisit and it looked like it was just a reprint of the original. Guess I better start checking the publication date on any that I find.

The books I have seen lately look like the first set. I was just recalling a rewrite he did awhile back.
