I had a mentor growing up as a young man, (grade 9 science teacher) he once said to me "If you are smart enough to look after the pennies and nickles, the dollars will take care of themselves." He died 12 years ago before I had a chance to say thank you.

What's the most thought provoking words you ever heard that made an impact on your life?

My Dad used to say:

No one owes you a living.

Just because you are here does not mean anyone has to care.

Take responsibly for your actions and think before you act. Ask yourself will it be worth the price you pay or the profits you make from your actions.

Jail time is dead time. Remember : Bubba and Tyrone will be more then happy to teach you the social graces of prison life.(there is more to this but I will stop here)

The biggest problem with drinking is you have to deal with drunks. A drunk does not care about anything but where he will get his next drink. The same applies to drug users.

When they legalize Marijuana I'll buy you a semi truck load of the stuff. Till then stay away from that crap. (I am still waiting)!

Grab yourself by your boot straps will be the only way you will get ahead in this world.

Last: Go ask your mother!

Don's is pretty close to the mark. My dad's words:

Get a job. If you can make money sitting on your butt, fine. Otherwise go to work.
If you get yourself into jail you can get yourself out. Don't call me.
Measure twice and cut once.
Do it the right way the first time. Shortcuts generally cause you more work.
Always take care of your tools and they will take care of you.
A place for everything and everything in its place.
Lefty loosy, righty tighty (I've always been surprised how often I use that)
If you borrow a tool, return it in better shape than you found it.
Didn't I just give you ten dollars?

If you have time to redo it right you had time to do it right the first time.

"If you never start, you never have to quit." (smoking, drinking, drugs, etc...)
"No tolerence means they can't make descisions or reason." (On control of guns, knives, etc...)

One I use for the people I tutor, "There is no stupid question, but the question not asked."

When God created man! She was just having a bad day!

No good comes from doing a good dead. (Ben Franklin)

You can have it one of two ways! Fast or right. Fast costs twice as much.

I trust only two people in this world! I am one! You are not the other!

Most people appear intelligent. That is till they open their mouths!

Thank God for spell check! It makes me appear like I know what I am talking about!

My first wifes father once told me,

"FVR, the hardest thing you will ever do, is make the transformation from blue collar to white collar, don't be ashamed if you can't, many can't, and realize they don't want to."

He was right. After over 10 years of faking it in an office, I chose to be back in the field, working with my hands, my back, and muscles. I'm happier and alot healthier.

To each his own.

Oh yeh, Mike Rowe, he is my hero. He has validated many a blue collar job.

and realize they don't want to."

I'll second that. I've been working in an office for 5 years and am looking for a way out as we speak.

Thanks for the read, Rick. I try to implore diffferent ways of teaching. Some people get it one way, while others don't. We have to be flexible with the way we teach and I try to put the topic into real life situations and show them how they are using the methods that I'm tutoring them while they don't even know it. Since I mainly tutor math, I have a lot of questions about word problems. So one of the first things I say is, "This won't be so bad, let's draw a picture so we can see what's going on here." It usually turns out that they are going in the right direction, but they just lack the confidence. Also, I find that while some may lack in some areas, they excel in others. But I'm not there to give them negative comments, but to give them positive reinforcement.

"Never look down on someone unless you're helping them up."
