I just checked this book out from our local library in the San Francisco Bay Area. Novella Carpenter wrote "Farm City" (2009) about her experiences gardening and raising livestock on a city lot in Oakland. California. The book seems to be entertaining and realistic; she includes a useful bibliography of sources related to urban homesteading.

No, she is not surviving in the "wilderness" but she has good insight on how people in urban and suburban areas can be more self-sufficient. As we say in Berkeley: "right on, groovy".

I love that book! Totally outlines what I would like to do at my next house.

Sidenote, I'm internet friends with her sister. She sent me a copy of her next book:

Which I highly recommend, for a more "how to" type guide.

Also, if you weren't aware, pick this one up, it's specific to our area.

Just because you live in a more urban environment doesn't mean you can't forage for wild edibles. Kevin also gives field classes on edible plants and mushrooms.
