Hello,

I'm from Denmark in Scandinavia and I'm looking to go to Alaska for about 3 month in the fall and live of the land. I would very much like to finde a place where it would be possible to cut down a few trees for making a little cabin. I can't really figure out how to approach this project in regards to finding a site for my camp. I will be going to Alaska on a turist visa and the cabin is therefore a temporary construction and easy to take down after use. I would really love to get some advice on where to get informations about the law regarding living on puplic land or boulding a cabin on puplic land. Or where to contact people which land it would okay to visit in this manner. I don't know if this is the right place to poste, but I would really love some help, Thank you in advance !!!

Welcome home. We have a number of Alaskans on here so they should be able to give you some advice. Just be aware there are no free lands in Alaska. All of it is own by some one.

Gonna bring your gun? To the US?
Gonna hunt?
Fish?
You'll need to apply for licenses for all three.
Not to mention the land owner might not want you cutting down several more than "a few trees" to build a cabin...Gonna bring your own axe?
Watch out for the bears.

You can't build a cabin anywhere but you can camp for up to 14 days in one spot on state land. Then you must move at least two miles for the next two weeks. All land here is owned either privately, by native corporations, by the state, or the federal government. Believe me, if you think you can go where no one will find you and set up a camp for 3 months, without anyone knowing you are there, you are mistaken. If "they" find you and you are trying to break the law by squatting, well, that would not be good. If you build a cabin on land that you do not own, they will burn it down (along with all your supplies and gear inside), fine you, and not let you back into the US.

I recommend that you get a good quality tent and come see the state. I can give you recommendations on different places that would be fun and beautiful but not for places to squat on someone's property. Also keep in mind we have more Park Rangers and Game Wardens then local police or Troopers. They fly over their areas as well as back pack through them for weeks. Will you be buying out of state hunting and fishing license? You would also not be allowed to hunt some of our game with out a licensed guide.

Hello,

I'm from Denmark in Scandinavia and I'm looking to go to Alaska for about 3 month in the fall and live of the land.

Oh also, we don't have 3 months for fall. It was 4 months to the day from our last snow fall last spring to our first snow this fall. Really, spring was 2 weeks, three months of summer, two weeks of fall, 9 months of winter. Summer is longer the farther south you go but there is also an increase in population down there due to the more mild temperatures and weather.

If "squatting" in Grizzly country be sure and leave a "Last Will and Testament," as well as having those organ doner cards filled out...that is if the bears don't eat your organs...just sayin'...:smartass:

Hunter63, saying Hey and Welcome.
I agree with the visit first.......and as far a living off the land, what were you planning on eating?...

Hi All,
Thank you for your inputs! though it seems that most off you think that entering bear country is s bad idea... As far of living of the land i'm thinking that there will be a fair amount of small game to trap or shoot and as long as your L-ascorbic acid need is covered you won't develop scurvy and it is therefore possible to live off meet for an extended period of time. I know that the winters are long and grim but that is not my main concern. To find a place to be able to make a little cabin and stay the same place or 3-4 month is the critical thing. So i'm interested in knowing if anybody knows or could think about an approach that I could have to finding a a camp side I would be happy to hear about it.

And again

Thank you all

Well you certainly can find a little cabin and stay for 3-4 months. Of course, you would want to rent it as buying one for such short amounts of time is not very efficient. Hang on and I'll find you some.

I have no problem going out in bear country and do it all the time. Here's a thread about my life in Alaska if you care to see it. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?21545-Alaska-2013

So, guess you have your VISA already? You'll need money for an out of state hunting license, oh yea, also money for out of state fishing license...

Here are some dry cabins for rent. They are all fairly close to town as the ones farther out are not generally for rent. You'd have to buy one.

Sorry for the late reply. I'm a nurse in the ER and I work approximately 80 hours per week, so it is not every day I get to go online and check this forum out. Thank you for the answers, it is very nice of you that you found some cabins for rent. The deal is that I would really like to make a little log cabin myself. Just a little one that can easily be removed again, it will take approximately 50 pine trees with a diameter about 11-12 inches. I know that all the land is owned by someone and that I need to get permission to take down trees. But don't you think it will be possible to find someone who would let me stay on their land for this period of time? I don't mind paying for the trees or staying on the land. I just really would like to make the cabin myself since i was planning this trip as my survival get away.

Yes that would be possible. I don't know of anyone though as most individuals who have bought property "out there" bought it to build their own cabin and wouldn't want others to be taking down their trees. Also, our trees up here in the interior are very small diameter.

Just out of curiosity, have you recently read the book, "One Man's Wilderness"?

Wow. Cool cabin links 1stimestar. I've been in Alabama for so long, I forgot it's physically possible to move that far away.

there are TONS of sites that sell land really cheap in alaska and though I realise your not looking to buy it may be a better alternative. All the land MAY BE OWNED but there is CERTAINLY plenty FOR SALE. Ive seen several.acres for as little as 3 or 4 thousand $
