Something like this may be handy for longer trekking in order to keep power to you cell or sat phone.

Pretty cool. They'll probably give them away in Africa, but sell them for over $100 here! Wonder if you can use any string, as I think that will be the first place the machine will go badly.

Now, if you were to apply that same technology on a bigger scale to power an electric motor for a car with an air compressor to automatically turn the generator....which also powers the air compressor motor.. (no gas consumption, no pollution)... Hmmm.

"freeplay" makes some good wind-up products with a 2year warranty. We have a wind-up led lantern as well as a radio. Maybe nothing anyone on-grid would be interested in but great stuff for off-griders. Eliminates all those batteries, rechargable or not.

Humor is great when you don't have to explain it. Sheesh. If you step that little thing up so it's large enough to power an electric motor on a car then you'd have to be Samson to yoyo that gizmo. Parup pump! See. It always falls flat when you have to explain.
