View Full Version : How to Make a Birch Bark Torch

You need a strip of very thick birch bark about 6 inches (15 cm) wide and 2 feet (60 cm) or so long. It may curl into a natural coil but if it doesn't, coil it and pull it into a tube and tie a string at the outside end to keep it coiled. Insert a stick into the opening at that end, before you tie the string and use the stick as a handle.

Simply light the other end and hold the torch upright and it will give you light for about 15 minutes. If the flames looks like its failing, wave it around for a moment or two. This kind of torch is not the best for sticking it in one spot because it needs movement to stay burning.
