I would like to startout and own my own property in the next 2-3 years 5-10 acres or more. What would be some good ways to start to make progress. I will start saving money but is there any other simple ways to make or save a little money on the side with out using to much space.

If this is really important to you, and it sounds like it is - write it down. Write down all of your goals - in all areas of your life. Be specific - NOT vague. This will be your "road map". Follow it! If you deviate from it you will not achieve your goals. Just like following a topographical map - if you deviate - you are lost. You can get back on track, but better to not get lost if it is a really important goal.

Make sure these goals are something that you really want, not just something that sounds good or is in vogue at the time.

Goals have to be realistic. That's not to say that they cannot be challenging. Here's what I mean. If you found your ideal plot of land and it costs $100,000 but your current income cannot support it then it's like trying to get across a bridge that is washed out on your map. You either need to find another way around, or repair the bridge. In this example, you will need to find a job/career to support your goal.

Your goals should be positive, not negative. Owning land - being self sufficient all good. Because of all of the crap out there - not so much.

Be very detailed in your goals - you need more than I want 5 - 10 acres of land and become self sufficient.

Now that you have your map - follow it. Do not deviate from it. Everything you do should be related to achieving those goals.

Along that line, when writing your list, start with the broad then fill in the details. I want 10 acres of land and to be more self sufficient. How to get there: Start a savings account just for your property, start learning such as taking classes from your local cooperative extension, start a garden (even if it is just a few tomato plants at first), take a first aid class, etc. Then every day go over your list. DO something every day to further yourself towards your goal.

Both are spot on in their answers. Written goals are seen as concrete goals while those you store in your head are more like dreams. It's just the way the brain works. Put down short terms goals (6 months to 1 year) and long term goals (more than 1 year). Then write down everything you can think of that will allow you to achieve those goals and any roadblocks that would prevent you from achieving them. That will tell you the positive things you need to work on as well as which roadblocks (washed out bridges) you need to work around.

And you have to realize if it were easy all of us would own exactly what you described.

I'm going to be 66 years old this June. When I was a young man in my 20's land was a lot more available and a lot more cheaper. Today the population has at least tripled, so land has become scarce and a lot more costly. We get on the average of at least one newbie a week on here asking basically the same question that you are asking. They don't want to here the truth when we tell them that it's not easy. Or that what they want is immature, unrealistic, or, in some cases, illegal. You've just gotten 3 responses that have told you what you need to do...the rest is up to you!....:smartass:

And I'll admit that I am doing just this and it is working very well.

I (We) have my(our) land, cabin....... "The Place" all paid for, only took us 25 years...(and when I say 'Us" I mean Us, because if Us isn't intrested, you lose 1/2 your stuff and have to start over)
Work hard, save your money, and stay with the plan.

Thank you I have started a list and will try to grow a few plants. This is an important goal it has been on my list since I was around 12 and I have always tried to have gardens. I have started hunting and fishing more recently. I found a way /job that allowed me to move to a more sustainable area. Is 2-3 years practical or is that pushing it.

Depends on how much money you have.......Land first, (but be sure you can do with it what you want), pay for it, .....then build.

Keep in mind that there will be expenses and property taxes. Start or continue saving every bit you can. In other words, keep working.

Write down where you want to be (end up, well at least a kind of end that is really another beginning)

Now work backwards listing what you need to do step by step down to what you need to do today.

Make that plan, review and revise it daily just before bed, and be sure you do at least one thing, even if it is just put a penny in your piggy bank towards the goal.

Start collecting info, get a binder or folder or something and store everything you can about your goal in it.

Get pics of what you want on the place, collect catalogs, talk with everyone who might offer insight.

One thing, land, water, rights to do what you want with said land. Big issues, become a real estate knowledgeable person.

Perhaps you can arrange to do some work for an elderly couple that need some homestead help. Hands on knowledge is awesome, and as you make friends among the community and people see you are truly serious about owning a homestead, doors will be opened for you. May take some time, but commitment and focus and intention move mountains.

What level of commitment, well I love talking in parables, so let me tell ya a story:

There was this king that wanted to conquer another kingdom, so he loads his soldiers into the boats and sails over to the other kingdom. Dismounts his army and as they march towards the enemy kings army he orders the boats burned behind them.

Then he tells his army, look, the boats are burning behind us, we either win or we die.

That level of commitment is what produces results.

Make up your mind you absolutely will get what you have set your sights on or you will die working towards it no matter how long, and you will always be successful even if you don't get there cause your life will have a committed meaning.

There is this story about this man who wanted to go into business with Thomas Edison, he had to ride the rails to get to Edison's laboratory, because he was broke. He walked up to the laboratory and managed to get a meeting with Edison himself. He told his that he had come to go into business with him. Edison told them to put him to work at some menial task and then see what he did.

He ended up Edison's partner in the hearing aid business that Edison and he developed.

Asked what prompted him to give the man (sorry I have forgotten his name at the moment) a chance, Edison replied that when a man stands behind a goal willing to either get it or die, he most often achieves amazing things.

Just saying, that if you really really really want something then it has to be a burning desire so hot that you can light a match just thinking about it.

You might try to get a copy of Napleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" it is about how to achieve you dreams and such. I am pretty sure that free PDF copies are available on it around the web as it is public domain stuff now. worth a google fu maybe.

Good luck, I have been working on my homestead dream for more than a half-century, and it is off to a nice beginning.

Thad.

I live in the same general area as you. There are parcels of raw land that are available here for low down payments with low monthly payments. My first 5 acre parcel was $50 down $110 per month. A guy could flip burgers and make that payment. You could be living your dream right now, doing it, not just planning it out.
