View Full Version : Baking on a camping stove: The pot-within-pot method (Pic Heavy)

I thought I would show a baking technique through some photos I took about 8 years ago that demonstrate how to use a regular camping stove.

When canoe tripping my wife and I have baked breads, muffins, cinnamon rolls, biscuits, cakes, even panzerotti. There's no need to buy a special-purpose Outback Oven or reflector oven for baking, and no need to settle for bannock, when you're in the mood for fresh bread after a week in the bush. All you need is an ordinary camping stove and two differently-sized pots as shown in the photos below. My wife and I have been baking this way in the bush for years and years. So far we've only had good results; every bit as good as what one can make with an Outback Oven and better than with a typical reflector oven. You CAN have your cake and eat it too.

Here's how we do it using our Trangia stove kit plus one large aluminium pot and a bit of tin foil, but this can be done with any camping stove, including a twig stove. For those who are wondering where I got the aluminum pot shown in my photos, it's just the cheapo large pot that comes in World Famous' camping mess kit. The one in the photos is one I've used since I was a boy.

And here are a few photos of some things we've baked using the pot-within-pot technique.

I will be uploading a video to my YouTube channel soon showing this baking technique.

Hope this helps,

Reputation. Look above your avatar in the left margin. You will see two green boxes. If you overlay your cursor over those boxes you'll get a message.

I'm glad you liked the post ElevenBravo.

Just to be clear, the pot-within-pot method is a very old camp cuisine technique, and not something my wife and I devised. I wouldn't want anyone to imagine that this clever baking idea is one we originated.

Great method. I've done this with my wallyworld 4pc coleman max cook set. Bannock or brownies for two over an alcohol stove is great.

Bet that set up is a whole light lighter than a dutch oven.....good stuff thanks.

I wonder if you can do that with standard cookware.......the dry heat might be too much for the usual stuff.

I have used a cardboard box to bake a cake though.

Great post Pine Martin! I have always thought baking in the woods was possible, but just didn't know how!

I'll tell you, I wish I had this site when I was in Boy Scouts. I would have look so cool doing half the stuff I've learned here... lol

I love it Pine. Such a simple concept with so many uses. You would be able to do the same thing with two pots on a bed of coals.

Thanks. I will try that in Deer Camp next year. We do use dutch ovens but that is interesting and lighter for some of our trips.
