Seems like Gerber fixed the problem with the Bear Grylls machete and now has the "Parang II" out:

Anybody that's interested, there you go! Me, I'm sticking with Camillus/Les Stroud.

I have not worried about anyone's brand, price or recalls since I bought his set a year or so back.

Top quality steel in every one of them with not much to get reaclled or fail. All five of them for less than the price of the black and orange plastic handle on the BG or the Camulis.

If you just got to have a machete.

I received a replacement for my recalled Gerber Parang a couple of months ago.
The parang would still serve my purposes better than the Camillus machete that I also have. Given the price that I paid for the parang, I think I'll keep it.

Wow, at first glance, the subject looked something about "Bear Grylls recalled". Oh well.

Does that mean you are using the item because you paid too much for it to declare it worthless?

Sounds like an argument on an AR vs AK thread!

While machetes and parangs are great, I'd like to find a good kukri at a comfortable price. I had the occasion to borrow a friend's once (I think it was from Cold Steel?) and everything about it; weight, balance, shape, it all just felt right. Any suggestions on which ones you would buy?

Some time back I looked at both the Cold Steel kukri and the Ka-Bar model. After doing some research I went with Ka-Bar, although, I could have paid a bit more and bought one of the higher priced Cold Steel models. I trust both brands so it's really a safe choice to make either way. :cool2:

No, its because I paid so little for it. I purchased the original during the "opening days" of the roll-out, and got it for about half of what folks pay now.
The only reason that I wanted a parang...machete...whatever was to limb trees for dry fire wood. Neither one of my shoulders will work overhead with a heavier tool. I have the Camillus machete, which I purchased when Gerber took my parang away,in the season when I needed it.
I like the Camillus, but the parang is lighter, and works much better for me.
The Camillus has a saw back that works very well, so I'll just keep both of them...the right tool for the job and all that.

I've had a couple of cold steel machetes and have thoroughly warped them. I won't get another one, but instead will stick to the kabar kuhkuri and ontario machete I have.
