I think it was the Alaska Outdoor Fourm, where I communicated with him.

That's really sad.
I'm all for following your dream but when you have a 13 yr old kid who depends on you, the dream should've been adjusted to a less risky one; IMHO.

Yea, I'm on AOD too, though not very active there any more. What was his username?

Alaska will take your life. And winter time, not a lot of chance for survival, long term. I like my survival quest adventures, I dont wander too far in so I can get out in the event of an emergency. That being said, Id still love to wonder around Alaska!!

I think the thirteen year old belonged to the woman he was staying with for a bit.

My bad.
He's got every right to get lost and die if that's what makes him happy. Sorry for those who'll miss him.

Well the guy seems to be fairly well versed in survival, much bette than the typical " I'm going to the wilderness and not coming back noob", so hopefully he will show up. But there are so many things that can happen that far out in the wilderness, that even the best of them die!

Everyone dies.....it seems that some are more in a hurry then others..
Hope for the best,....prepare for the worst.

Do survivalists have wills?
Just asking...

If they do, wouldn't they be more aptly called preppers?
At this time of year in that place, I don't think they are going to find him alive.

Of course not. They think they'll be the only ones to survive.

I do, not everybody dies trying to survive out in the wilderness.

A follow up story. That's my friend Greg mentioned towards the end of the story. Fyi, a snow go is a snow machine, or snowmobile in the lower 48. Snowgo is used mostly in the villages and by Alaska Natives.

Swallowed by the Great Land

... Reading the article, the word "survivalist" made me picture cult members cramming underground bunkers full of canned Spam and ammo. The story said the man was from Wisconsin, an instructor from some Talking Drum Outdoor school.

Instantly, I knew Alaskans were going to come down hard on this guy. People would recall Timothy Treadwell eaten by bears, and "Into the Wild" skinny boy (Christopher McCandless) starving in his bus. Many of us are lifelong Alaskans, and plenty are from lower states, too, the majority spending days in heated buildings and most time in the country riding machines. But we seem to reserve a special place in our hearts for despising Outsiders who walk into the wild and find trouble.
