My round griddle has a rough surface. It does not wipe clean as easy as I wish it would. Can the surface be smoothed by sanding or something like that? Anyone ever do that?

I've used a scotch bright disc on an angle grinder to smooth them out....worked well.

Great! I can get some of those at work. I am surprised though, I though cast iron was unbelievably hard.

Cast iron is relatively soft as far as metals go. There is some rough cast stuff out there now, after you sand it smoother be sure and season it several times and it will get slicker. It will also become more smooth the more you use and season it.

Ok, the sarcasm is appreciated and expected. I would have said the same thing. The stupid remark about me thinking cast iron was extremely hard was, as I said, stupid. I did not know that cast iron was soft since they hammer engine bloocks with sledge hammers to clean the sand out.
Soooo, back to the subject. Other methods you have used to smooth a fry pan surface.

I think sanding it until you reach the desired texture, then a few seasons would good okay.

I had a skillet that was a bit rough. I cleaned off in the oven, then put a sanding wheel on a buffer. 60grit, 120 grit, then I rubbed canola oil all over it. Placed it in the oven for 1hr at 250. After that, cooked bacon.....YUMM!

Totally. Be sure to wash it thoroughly after sanding/polishing and before seasoning and use. I know you need iron in the diet, but that's doing it the wrong way :D

I would do the angle grinder sanding disk approach, or a small stick-on sanding disk on a round block and just work around in circular motions. Cast iron is pretty giving.

I'd go with a flap disc that is not too aggressive.
