Hi folks--physical problems have kept me off the trail for many years, but I've decided that even 5 miles a day is better than none! I'm lucky enough to live in a trailer with a view of the the Pacific Ocean at sunset; it's time to view the sunrise over mountains again. Looking at the wealth of info available over the Internet, I can see how much things have changed in the last 20 years, so i'm asking for help in many areas--light weight packing specifics to start with, so any pertinent threads for sleeping bags and mattresses, clothing, and shelter would be appreciated--please give me directions. My first thank you is to the originator(s) and keepers of the flame for this site, and my thanks in advance to those with advice (I might even follow yours).

Hello and welcome. You've come to the right place. The search function may help with some of your questions, but feel free to ask away.

hey there and thanks for the welcome--this is my first experience with a forum, and I'm a bit blown away by the immediacy of communication. Crashdrive 123, thanks for the links--golite was recommended by a friend, and I already own one of their windshirts--say hotdamn! that is an awesome piece of gear! And rebel--funny thing about being a native Californian, where getting a tan is sort of a civic duty--my (lovely) ex always had fun with the fact that I tan almost all over, but my neck remains stubbornly red (really!). Guess coming from a long line of folk from Louisiana and Mississippi bred true. That's where "farquhar" came from--old family name. And "help you out"? Do you need a link to some quality seed stock? Plus, y'all, as I peruse the site, I see a lot of predator avatars, but when the predator is done, us turkey buzzards are necessary parts of the wildscape, eh?

well, lady and gentlemen (?) (Daddy always said to be polite)
I like the style around this place. I think it will be fun to hang out here--maybe in a while I'll even be able to contribute my own drolleries and witticisms.

Welcome home, farquhar. Glad you found us. There is a wealth of information posted on here. The search function is restricted to words over three letters but other than that you should be able to find anything you want. If you do a search, the words will appear in RED in the body of the results making it easy to locate. There is a sticky on the main page about how to post pictures so you might want to take a look at that as well. Otherwise, any questions, just ask. Glad to have another geezer on here.:D

Hey there wareagle--in the words of Elvis Costello, "What's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?" It also doesn't hurt to have a 12 gauge sighted in @ 100 yds, w/ a Glock for up close and personal. Still a hippie, but I plan on surviving to be an even older one.

Oh Farquhar, I think you're going to fit in just fine around here.:D:D

There is something very dangerous about a hippie with a weapon. There is just too much irony there to mess with!

:D Hi gang--thought I'd revisit to see how many people I might have upset--from the responses, I think I REALLY will fit in here. Thank you all. And the Farquhar nickname is from the Scottish side of the family--someone knows things about me I don't, so I guess there's some research in front of me (altho you almost scared me, Beowulf--I saw all those Hs and As and Gs and my dyslexic side screamed "haggis?!?!? ohnononono").
