My first ever fishing licenses: $23. I didnt have the extra money for trout so Ill be heading to Carvins Cove, they just stocked Roanoke River from what I am told.
115 yds of 8lb line put on my acquired shorty pole: $3.25
Beginner tackle: Jig heads, jigs, some swivels, bobbers, split shot & a stringer $9
Small spoons, pair $4
Mimic Minnows, small, pair $4
Since I only have one pole, me and the daughter will have to share, but hey... getting started on a budget is cool!
Been reading "Fishing For Dummies", its a really really good book... watching some Youtube videos, now I need some time under my belt and a lot more knowledge and Ill be good!!
Ill take the camera in case I actually get anything!!

Good for you!! Two things you need to know. 1. How to tie the correct knot. The wrong knot can cut the line when weight is applied. I use an improved clinch but there are scads of knots out there. Just googlefu "fishing knots".
You also want to know how to remove a hook from yourself....just in case.

Good luck and pics or it didn't happen!!!!!

Just remember, fish aren't stupid. Try to sneak up on them.

You will do fine...seems like the new guys just kill them, often showing up the old salts...
Have fun........

Congrats! Just starting out you're going to find how addictive the sport can be! I saw a T-shirt awhile back that read "Just got a new fishing pole for my wife...best trade I ever made!" One rule, ya gotta have fun!

Remember that we don't call it "catching" for a reason.
There is something special about just getting ready to go...always.

I found a Shakespear reel that I bought for a slingshot/reel project (to put up a HAM antenna) that flopped, so I ran by Sportsmans Warehouse to see if they had a dirt cheap rod I could put it on.
Ended up getting a Shakespear push button rod/reel combo for $15 (which I didnt plan on spending but you cant take it with you). Its the pink "Lady Fish" setup for breast cancer awareness, which she mentioned a few weeks ago that she wanted anyway... so daddy is super daddy for a day! HA HA!
Im still less than $80 into this so its two people fishing on the cheap... STILL!
I got the camcorder and camera... wish me luck!

They came and took all the fish in the night, cause there wasnt any when we went...
J/K, we did see 1 jump out the water, and a few crappies (I think...) near the dock, but didnt get any fish.
She wants to go back tomorrow and try again...

Maybe they will put the fish back before I go again...
I cant stand that short pole, after casting the long one... I realize I really need to upgrade. Even a $20 beginner will be
better than the shorty. All in all, didnt catch anything but weeds, and I caught the dock twice... but had a good time!

BTW, going to try the "fishfinder rig" (sinker bottom, hook side) when I go back, from the reviews Ive got faith from all the positive reviews that the Mimic Minnow *will* work. Learning and playing is fun... not catching fish is depressing. But I know, as soon as I reel one it Im gonna dance like a little girl.

Nice Lake! Great pics Andrew! Wish I was there! (sorry, but this was the only Smiley with a fish on it that I could find!) Go Zebco 33 for a nice beginner combo! Sop around and you can find them for about 20 bucks! :cool2:

Scored a full size pole & reel (Shakespear) from Wally for $15, got a pair of small bug like lures, some heavier sinkers and some nice bobbers too... Looking forward to my next trip....
Having just stocked the Roanoke River.... how much longer must I wait before I can fish there without my Trout stamp??

AndrewDon't know about where you live, but here in Illinois you can fish without a trout stamp, but if you catch a trout you just have to release it right away back into the water. :cool2:

For Virginia, you need a trout endorsement to fish in waters that are stocked. I think its year round from what Im reading on DGIF site. Once I get another $23 Ill get the stamp. I love the taste of Trout anyway...

It's great to see you out with the family. Do you have any access to a small farm pond? Bluegill are feisty, almost always hungry, and a bit easier to fool than your average bear. That would make for a bit more satisfaction to start, if you can get access to one.

Any chance you can get to the bottom of the dock and fish around the pillings? If there is any depth to the water around them, I would think you may do better than just casting off the end of the dock
