Heard the story on the radio earlier today. Looks like Google didn't have a problem with it since they say it violated their own policy.

I posted some comments at the bottom of that article link.. This was obviously an oversight??? of the photographer.. Got to be careful out there..

hah, some people are being concerned being photographed entering an adult bookstore too now apparently. maybe they shouldn't have even been in there in the first place. tsk tsk on them.

That controversary has been around since street view came about a year or more ago. Not real thrilled with the idea that I could be posted on the internet doing x, y, or z, but hell, the same freedom that gives me the ability to do those things gives them the ability to put it online.

I totally agree with that. National security comes before freedom of information imho, as long as the administration keeps a reign on it.

I was referring to the ability of them to take a picture of the street and post it on the internet...I remember a scandal when it first came out because someone was captured sunbathing. Also the porn shop thing. There was some scandal about guys getting caught coming out of a brothel also.

It seems that when you in public, your open to whatever anyone wants as in taking pics. Personally I don't go places I have to worry about, but it should be considered as a privacy issue I think. And what are your expectations of privacy when out in public, mine include if I want my pic posted or not and someone just taking it and posting it anywhere is wrong without consent imho.

I don't really expect any privacy out in public anymore. With sites like youparklikean**hole.com, and all the amateur papparazzi crap going on, people can get away with just about anything. You can sue, and you may or may not win, depending on the other's actions, but that's about the limit of your ability to retaliate in today's society. I could, if I wanted, put up a site called wolfpacksucks.com, and put up a bio on each and every one of you, and put you on blast. Not that I would, or even have a reason to, but at most, you could sue me for slander (or is that liable? can't remember which is spoken and which is written). Many of you have provided information regarding your real name, and even given photos of yourself. Not an issue, but it does give other's the ability to take your privacy and walk over it if they choose.

I do believe in privacy in my own home, which is my sanctuary from the chaos of the "warzone" we call society. That's one reason why I use linux instead of Windows. I can control what my machine does, as I can see every single aspect of it and configure it as I want, to do what I want. I don't have to worry about spyware, etc etc. But that's a whole 'nother ballgame. But even then it's still not really "private".

For example, every site you visit is logged by your ISP. If you end up getting into trouble "they" can subpeona your surfing history from your service provider and find everything you've done for a set period. I don't work for an ISP so I don't know the length of time the logs are kept, but all those "anonymizer" and proxy services don't really do a d*mn thing except make you feel a little more secure while you're frying your own azz.

Sorry for the book, but my current job is working with webservers, and I see many of the effects of privacy online, and while the net and the real world may be different in many areas, the bleed over into so many as well. Just like the whole google thing.

I'm sure it unlawful here too, if you get caught. I have a lot of oics of Ft. Campbell and the flightline and 5th SFG areas, and Ft. Bragg and the restricted compound for SF but they just sit in an old album if I even still have them. Wasn't legal to take them back then, don't know if it is now.

Might as well leave them on. We don't have any border security so anyone could come in and take the pics themselves. At least with the online maps we have less chance of terrorists or whatever they call themselves blowing up some folks just to try and find a virgin, must be tough in their country for their livestock and any man without a beard.

Have you actually looked at Google Earth? You can view Area 51 from an altitude of 5000 ft. with crystal clarity. I even saw an alien waving a "phone home" sign.

There's some speculation that Google Earth will actually replace topo maps altogether over the next few years. Not that I'm looking forward to it or holding my breath, but I can see it happening.

I take one with me when I'm out. Knowing what the terrain actually looks like rather than just reading the contours is a huge improvement in my opinion.

Agreed. But I agree with Rick, too. sometimes a picture of the land without elevation can screw you, and sometimes it's the opposite. Carrying both is probably the best scenario, which is why I don't necessarily agree that they'll replace them, but they do work well in combination.

Google Earth does show elevation. Not in the contours the way a contour map does but if you run the cursor across the terrain, it tells you the elevation at the bottom, in the center of the screen. I generally plot out my proposed route and get a generally idea of elevation, particularly if Google Earth shows some hills that I need to be concerned with.
