Does anybody know how to extract water other than boiling and solar stills?

depends on what you're hoping to extract it from. many plants store usable amounts of potable fluids in thier roots, vines, leaves, etc.

many bodies of standing or flowing water can be drinken with relative safety if you are sure you will have access to medical help within a week or so.

many contaminants can be overcome with various chemical compounds, or treatment techniques other than boiling or solar distillation.

many plants will give more water alive than dead, if transpiration, rather than solar evapotation is used for recovery.

Filtration (usually sand)

Chemical (clorine 1 cap/1 gal)

Then ther are those over priced commercial filtration devices.

I love my over priced commercial filtration device. It puts out lots of clean water in a short amount of time and I've never been sick.:D

Same here. I love my over priced $49 Katadyn Hiker Pro Microfilter. Never been sick either from using it.

I might think of buying one, to keep in a car survival kit. But when camping, I'll use the old fashioned techniques if possible (in a healthy way).
