The grommet start is one way to start a bit of tubular netting at the bottom of the net. When the net reaches the desired length a separate cord is put through the upper meshes to make a drawstring.

The grommet forms the bottom of the bag you will be making.
1. Tie a slip knot leaving a tail 3 times the length of the bag you want to make. Place the loop over a fixed point.

2. Take your gauge and tie your first sheet bend immediately to the right of the slip knot.

3. Continue netting into the loop until you have ONE less than the desired number of loops.

4. Remove the loop from the support and thread the tail through the loop. Pull on the tail near the slip knot to reduce the size of the loop.

5. Pull on the tail until the loop is tight against the slip knot. Then pull the tail through the tightened loop to form the grommet.

6. Tie the tail and working end together with a square (reef) knot.

7. Thread a support (button, swivel, etc.) through the center of the grommet and place the loop over the fixed point. Make sure the needle is on the left.

8. Tie drop knot http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?19892-The-Drop-Knot-Netmaking with tail and begin netting into the first and subsequent loops of the grommet.

9. Ready to tie the drop knot and start the next row.

An excellent alternative to the button is a fishing line swivel. This eliminates the twisting of the loop that occurs as succeeding rows of netting are formed. Tony

Cool. Is there a specific type of cordag you use? Not that some of it isn't cheap, but the huge amount needed can get costly I'd imagine.

I have yet to find a good video on basic netmaking. I do not have the facilities to make a video myself. I wrote these instructions in in 1982 in response to many requests. They are a good starting point. I have also written hints to new net makers and many other tutorials that you can find in this how-to secton of the forum. You can try out these once you have mastered the fundamentals.

If you will be in eastern Pennsylvania the second Saturday in August come see me displaying my nets and demonstrating netmaking and giving free lessons. I will be posting details in a couple of weeks. Tony

I generally use cotton or linen cordage because most of my netting is rercreations of fishing and storage nets used in the 18th and 19th centuries in Pennsylvania. I will use synthetic materials when requested or if the application demands it (camping hammock). Tony
