I am not a very good photographer and even if I was the angles with the sun make these pictures not the best exposure.

But, Basilisks are really alert and skittish. So I was surprised that I got as close as I did. It got tougher the closer I got because ficus trees have exposed roots and it was kind of tough moving in those roots.

I spotted him from the patio and walked to the corner of my yard. I wanted to see how close I could get so I slipped over the fence and slid toward him on one knee.

This was still a pretty good view from the yard.

Here is a short BBC video showing them doing their thing.

We used to be able to ride 4 wheelers out near where I live and you would hear things splashing across the water in mass. It was juvenile basilisks.

Another danged dinosaur. Is the south in the 21st century yet? (Bazinga!)

They are great pics. Looks like he was dozing. If he's still there in a couple of days you might figure he's dead. (Sort of Bazinga!)

Rick he boogied about three pictures after the closest I posted. I was working from one knee over them danged ficus roots and there were three ibis in the tree that were making a fuss and jumping from branch to branch. I was in the process of moving when I heard him move. I hadn't looked at him except through the lens. Always looking down to avoid eye contact. I looked up quickly just before he bolted. He was just about arms reach at the time. But, I didn't realize that until I got up. Interestingly enough I never heard him hit the water because he didn't. Once I walked off a few yards he came back around the tree trunk and back onto HIS branch!

We'll see if he is still that bold when the big iguanas make there comeback. Before the big freeze we had a few years ago, that ficus was the home of about a 6' male and his girls.
