Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello to everyone here. I just found your site and am real excited to see if anyone else in my neck of the woods is here as well. Looking to learn to knap to add to my arrow and selfbow making and learn from those of you who are aleady there. Can't wait to hear from you guys.

Thanks for the welcome into the circle. Trax I chose the name Redbear cause I'm of Cherokee descent and the bear is my spirit guide and red is his color. We both are at home in the woods and don't need much to survive. I am glad to make your acquaintance and look forward to learning some new skills. Rick even bad knapping is a start!

How do you heat the glass?

canid
03-03-2008, 01:12 PM
no heat treatment.

Rick
03-03-2008, 01:37 PM
Okay, beer bottle obsidian sort of implied to me you melted the glass.

canid
03-03-2008, 02:36 PM
no, just put it that way because glass flakes much like obsidian.

on that note, since bottles are blown [and the crystal matrix is stretched and bent when formed], i assume they will have different pressures and a grain influencing thier cleavage when worked. i wonder if heat treatment would make them even more predictable, since glass is already one of the easiest materials to knapp.

Rick

Okay. Got you. I was thinking the whole lava, melted rock thing, on the obsidian. That's why I thought you melted the glass. I'm with you now.

canid

glass has already been melted, by somebody with more freetime on their hands than i...

wait, i guess that's not true about the free time bit.

Are the rotating avatars a conspiracy just to confuse me? I'm actually getting dizzy.

Ridge - Toilet chert comes from the outside of the toilet not the inside.

Well, all I know is that it was brown... and I was thinking old toilets... brown.... ewwww!! and it was spelled like a misspelled acronym or something.. But then, I wouldn't know.. where I come from toilets are white.. sometimes blue...
